Katrine and her husband dreamed of having a child together, but fertility challenges stood in their way. Katrine has PCOS, a hormonal disorder that makes it difficult to conceive, while her husband’s s***m quality had been affected by years of working with harmful chemicals. Already a father of two, he was unsure if he wanted to go through fertility treatment again.
For Katrine, the desire to have a child was overwhelming, and together they decided to use a s***m donor. The only thing that truly mattered to her was that the donor resembled her husband—beyond that, she wasn’t concerned with the details.
When choosing between an ID Release Donor and a No ID Release Donor, Katrine carefully considered whether their daughter should have the option to contact the donor one day. In the end, she chose a No ID Release Donor.
Today, Katrine and her husband are overjoyed with their daughter. For Katrine, what truly defines a father is not biology, but love and commitment. Yet, a new challenge has emerged: How and when should they tell their daughter that she was conceived with donor s***m? On top of that, well-meaning but uninformed comments about how much her daughter resembles her father make the conversation even harder.
The journey has been both emotionally and financially demanding, but Katrine has no regrets. Her advice to others considering a s***m donor is to be well-prepared—both mentally and practically—and to remember that family is built on love, not just genetics.
