"The theory assumes that physiological (autonomic) state functions as an intervening variable influencing the effectiveness of treatment (therapeutic manipulations including medical procedures, psychotherapy and psychoeducation)."
"Note that this principle of 'feeling safe' as the precursor of treatment is not well integrated into educational, medical and mental health treatment models. In addition, the physical environments in which therapy is delivered are seldom vetted for cues (low frequency background sounds, street noises, ventilation system sounds, vibrations from elevators) that would trigger, via neuroception, defensive states of the autonomic nervous system, which would interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment."
