Thanks to everyone who came by last Wednesday to meet us and Eye on Global Health!🤩 We had a great time meeting and talking to all of you and we are looking forward to working together in the future!🙌

For those who were not able to join, here's a little recap 📃.

During the event, we presented our global health initiatives and plans for the academic year, as well as ways to get involved.

After some drinks☕️ and snacks🍰, we discussed "What does decolonizing global health mean?" 🤔 and concrete ways to decolonize global health, globally and locally👊. We will post some of the suggestions 🔜, so stay tuned to read what our participants' proposed!

Then, our friends at Eye on Global Health organized a writing activity 📝 to practice communicating scientific research to the general public.

The afternoon ended with some mingling among students and staff 👥

P.S. There was no dress code at the event but somehow our team members showed up in very similar outfits 😂

How have we engaged in the broader discussion on decolonization? 🧐 Earlier in the summer, students in the decolonizing global health working group at Eye on Global Health organized a panel discussion on Decolonizing Academia at the Asia and Africa in Transition conference at the University of Copenhagen 🌍.

Our panelists Somdeep Sen, Aria Danaparamita, and Emnet Tadesse Woldegiorgis shared experiences with the decolonization movement, perspectives on the meaning of decolonizing academia, decolonizing knowledge production, and existing power structures and partnerships, and much more📚.

If you have missed the chance to attend, we got you🤩! The video recording 🎥 is available on our Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6vaUHD4iU4 . Watch our panel with moderator Renzo Guinto guiding this insightful discussion about key issues of academia and don’t forget to share your thoughts🗣!

What have we done so far to 'decolonize' global health? Let's look back at our past initiatives at the University of Copenhagen✊

In 2019 some of our fellow passionate students at Eye on Global Health organized a 2-day seminar on 'Decolonising Global Health’ in collaboration with Sammen mod Racisme and the School of Global Health - University of Copenhagen. The first day, which was led by Mica Oh and focused on structural racism and personal reflection, was followed by a session on colonial legacy in academia and epistemic responsibility led by Professor Adrián Groglopo.

You can read about the very interesting seminars on Eye on Global Health's blog.

Welcome everyone to Decolonizing Global Health at the University of Copenhagen! 👋

🔴 Who are we?
We are a student initiative aiming to educate students and staff on systematic racism and the legacy of colonialism within Global health 🌍 at the University of Copenhagen. We aim to reflect on the positions we hold as GH students and (future) professionals and researchers 🤔. Our goal is to identify and address prejudices and harmful stereotypes among ourselves, staff, and curricula. Additionally, we want to collaborate with other decolonizing GH initiatives and expand our initiative into other disciplines at UCPH.

🔴 What can you expect from us?
We want to use our social media channels to keep our followers up to date with upcoming events, workshops, and seminars. We will share resources and tools for people to educate themselves on racism and colonialism within GH. And we are even more excited to interact with you and share experiences and knowledge!
