“All the happiness there is in this world
arises from wishing others to be happy.”
– Shantideva
This simple truth points to something very deep: real happiness comes not from focusing on ourselves, but from genuinely caring for others.
In Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, Shantideva goes even further, encouraging us to become a source of benefit for everyone:
“…to accomplish the welfare of all living beings
I will transform my body into an enlightened wishfulfilling jewel.”
Within each of us lies this potential. Our Buddha nature is like a wishfulfilling jewel – a source of wisdom, love, and compassion that can fulfill both our own wishes and those of others.
In Ta**ra, we learn how to bring this potential into our actual experience. Through the practice of self-generation, such as identifying ourself as Buddha Shakyamuni, we begin to let go of limited self-views and instead train in seeing ourself as a being whose very nature is to benefit others.
In this way, cherishing others is no longer just an idea. It becomes something we gradually become.
Join us this spring to explore these profound and practical methods.
