The tune-up is your warm-up. And warm-ups can be really, really boring. But the goal for you is to whatever time you have with an athlete, make it meaningful, and more importantly, progress it. So the goal behind these tune-up sessions is that it’s all derived in the lens of motor learning and skill development. So movement is a skill. Being able to run, jump, skip, throw, those are all skill-based things. They might not be so much skill compared to grabbing or throwing a Hanball. But from a physical literacy standpoint, it is a skill. So We need to spend time developing more skill. This is where you can think of it as, I want sensory inputs. You can use different types of surfaces to be able to feel, so to get more input to the body so that you’re more in tune, and that you can feel more things. This is where it’s very joint-specific. You can focus on the example we used earlier, tibial internal and external rotation, big toe extension inflection, shoulder internal, internal rotation, external rotation, thoracic rotation, which is the big one that we miss, and of course, hip internal rotation, which most people lack.
So this is an opportunity to have fun and explore. And the idea, if we’re warming up, we generally are going to work through a full range of motion because this is preparing all of our joints and our tissues to experience something harsher that’s coming, rather that’s coming from tactical or tactical aspects of sport, from competition, or we’re using a tune-up session to help build onto our turbo or an engine session. And then the great thing about it, it’s low cost. General warm-ups generally doesn’t cost a lot of energy for you.

Cable loaded plyometrics and de acceleration.

Plyometric exercises have long been heralded as a cornerstone of athletic development, particularly in sports such as professional handball, where explosive power, agility, and rapid force production are paramount. Introducing loaded plyometric training as a strategic intervention can elevate an athlete’s performance by targeting neuromuscular efficiency, enhancing vertical jump, lateral explosiveness, and overall agility.

One notable advancement in this realm is the integration of cable machine-based loading into plyometric regimens. Unlike resistance bands, which often present variable resistance that can compromise the precise targeting of specific muscle groups, cable machines offer a controlled and consistent load. This facilitates seamless adjustments to resistance, ensuring that training intensity aligns with the athlete’s capacity and performance goals.

Why is this important for handball?

Explosive Power Development: Plyometric training, particularly under load, enables athletes to generate maximum force in minimal time—a critical attribute for rapid directional changes, powerful throws, and vertical leaps.
Optimized Load Progression: The cable machine’s ease of load adjustment supports progressive overload, a key principle in strength and power adaptation, without the variability or instability often associated with resistance bands.
Sport-Specific Enhancements: Loaded plyometrics simulate the dynamic and forceful movements inherent in handball, bridging the gap between gym training and in-game performance.
Incorporating cable machine-loaded plyometric exercises into professional handball training protocols empowers athletes to fine-tune their explosive capabilities with precision, ultimately gaining the competitive edge required for peak performance on the court.

The Role of Fast-Twitch Muscle Fiber Activation in First-Step Acceleration and Sport Performance Enhancement
First-step acceleration is a critical determinant of athletic performance across a variety of sports, influencing an athlete’s ability to initiate movement quickly and gain a competitive advantage. Central to this rapid propulsion is the activation of fast-twitch muscle fibers, which are specialized for high-intensity, anaerobic efforts. These fibers, also referred to as Type II fibers, are particularly effective in generating force during short-duration, explosive movements such as the initial phase of a sprint.
The rapid recruitment of fast-twitch fibers is essential for maximizing first-step acceleration, as these fibers are capable of producing greater force at higher velocities compared to their slow-twitch counterparts. Training modalities designed to stimulate fast-twitch fibers—such as resisted sprints, plyometrics, and explosive strength exercises—have been shown to significantly enhance the rate of force development (RFD) and improve the time-to-peak velocity during the acceleration phase.
First-step acceleration is not merely a biomechanical event but a crucial performance characteristic that underpins an athlete’s ability to quickly attain top speed and effectively position themselves in relation to their opponents. A powerful initial acceleration enables an athlete to gain critical positional advantages in sports that require dynamic, high-intensity movements, such as football, basketball, and track.
In this context, optimizing the neuromuscular adaptations that support first-step acceleration can yield substantial improvements in overall athletic performance. By focusing on exercises that enhance fast-twitch fiber recruitment and rate of force development, athletes can achieve a more rapid and efficient start, which is often a decisive factor in performance outcomes.
Ultimately, the effective training of fast-twitch fibers and the refinement of first-step acceleration are integral to advancing an athlete’s competitive capacity and long-term success.

Enhancing Athletic Performance Through Animal Movements

Incorporating animal movements into athletic training is an effective method for enhancing motor learning, improving body awareness, and refining overall movement quality—key factors in optimizing sport performances

Motor Learning & Neuromuscular Coordination
Animal movements, engage complex motor patterns that require precise neuromuscular coordination. This engagement stimulates neuroplasticity, improving the brain’s ability to control and refine movement sequences, which translates into more efficient and fluid athletic performance.

Body Awareness & Proprioception
These exercises necessitate multi-joint coordination and dynamic postural control, thereby fostering heightened proprioception—the sense of one’s body in space. For athletes, developing this body awareness is critical for optimizing technique, preventing injury, and enhancing overall movement efficiency during sport-specific tasks.

Joint Mobility & Flexibility
The diverse range of motion inherent in animal movements promotes flexibility and joint mobility, which are crucial for sustaining peak athletic performance. Enhanced range of motion not only contributes to better movement patterns but also reduces the risk of injury during high-intensity activities.

Core Stability & Functional Strength
Many animal exercises emphasize core stability and functional strength, which are vital for dynamic, high-intensity movements in sport. These exercises activate deep stabilizing muscles, improving trunk strength and stability, which supports efficient force transfer and optimal movement mechanics during athletic performance.

Incorporating animal-based exercises into a training regimen is an evidence-based strategy for athletes seeking to improve coordination, body awareness, and movement efficiency—ultimately enhancing overall performance in their respective sports. 🐅🦁

Master the Lateral Lunge to Improve Your🔥

If I had to pick a essential exercise for handball players to improve their change of direction on the field, I’d go with the Lateral Lunge. It forces you to move side-to-side in the frontal plane rather than front and back in the saggital plane. Most steps in feints and change of direction in handball is more frontal than saggital and should be trained accordingly.

The Lateral Lunge also closely replicates the position you need for efficient changing direction, fixing stride positioning problems. A good lunge position involves knee bend, hip hinge, a neutral spine and full extension on the opposite leg.

From a functional strength and athletic performance standpoint. Lateral lunges simulate movements athletes perform during sports, such as cutting, pivoting, and changing direction quickly. By strengthening muscles involved in these movements, athletes can improve agility, speed, and power output

Season 23-24 was an amazing expirience. But due to financial disagreement I have decided not to prolong my contract in Dinamo Bucaresti. What the future brings I do not know, but what ever happened Im proud and happy for my time in dinamo. 3 titles, undefeated in Romania and made it to the finale 4 in Europe.
I will say thank you to the players for there commitment and trust and the staff for the corporation and make me develop as a coach as well.

I’m looking for what comes next, whatever it is.
Hai Dinamo ⚪️🔴
