Thank you very much to the Ophthalmological Society of the West Indies (OSWI) for your kind congratulations and support. It was a privilege to represent Caribbean Ophthalmology at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Congress 2024 in Belfast. The immersive and collaborative experience was truly enriching, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share our work on Cataract Surgery Partnerships across the Caribbean Region.

We are proud of the progress made in reducing waiting times for cataract surgery in Dominica, St. Lucia, and Antigua & Barbuda, and it was an honor to present these achievements alongside my esteemed colleagues, Dr Ronnie Bhola, Dr. Dharmendra Shah, and Franka Mohammed MBA. BSc..

We look forward to continuing our efforts in improving eye care in the Caribbean and appreciate the ongoing support from OSWI.

Eye safety during a solar eclipse.

Today Monday, April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse of the sun. This occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun. It will be seen at various times along a path in North America starting from 140pm to 3.32pm in the USA. At any one place the total eclipse will last about 3 to 4 minutes.

In Dominica a partial eclipse can be seen between 13.18pm to 13. 35pm today.

It is dangerous to look at the eclipse without special eclipse glasses.

Eclipse glasses must meet ISO 12312-2 International safety standard. The eclipse glasses label must have ISO printed on it.

The UV and infrared rays emitted from the sun can cause irreversible damage to the retina resulting in permanent impaired vision.

Do not use sunglasses, old xray films, camera, telescope or binoculars to look at the eclipse.

Welders filter less than 12 is NOT SAFE TO USE TO LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE.

Use a Pinole in a cardboard to project the eclipse on the ground. Look at the projected image of the eclipse on the ground.

KEEP CHILDREN INDOORS DURING THE ECLIPSE It may be difficult to control them from looking directly at the eclipse.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.
If you look at the eclipse without eye protection you will experience eye discomfort and blurry vision known as SOLAR RETINOPATHY. There is no treatment for it.

PROTECT YOUR EYES DURING THE SOLAR ECLIPSE TODAY!

In December, the Health Ministries of the East Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventist acknowledged and celebrated the dedication and service of Health Ministries leaders and Adventist Health Professionals.

In Barbados, 42 individuals were honored with certificates and tokens during a special dinner on December 3rd, while 24 professionals received similar recognition on December 26th in Dominica. Additionally, notable community members were lauded for their significant contributions to various health fields.

Though I was unable to attend the event on the 26th, I had the honor of receiving my certificate and token at my office on January 6th.

This recognition was for my three decades of service in ophthalmology in Dominica. Mrs. Priscilla Prevost, a retired Family Nurse Practitioner and former Health Ministries Director, graciously presented me with the Certificate of Appreciation from the Adventist Health Ministries.

Recently, we had the honor of handing over a monetary gift from our consultant ophthalmologist, Dr. Hazel Shillingford-Ricketts , to Loïk Charles.

This donation, part of the Q'Dos to Dominican Hero Award from Q95fm Radio Dominica, was given to Charles in recognition of his inspiring journey.

Despite his blindness, Loik has broken down barriers for those with disabilities. A trailblazer, he graduated from Saint Mary's Academy, earned an IT degree, and pursued further studies in Texas.

Now, with his achievements, Loik is committed to creating new opportunities in employment and education for people with disabilities.

HMS Eye Centre's commitment to supporting inspirational figures like Loik Charles demonstrates our ongoing effort to foster positive change in ophthalmology and beyond.
