As we continue to grapple with the impacts of COVID-19, it is important that we remember our roles in assisting the ageing to cope as well. Firstly their exposure places them at a greater risk and secondly, socialisation restrictions enforced to curb the spread of the pandemic can have adverse impacts for our ageing population in terms of social isolation and loneliness. Let's continue to support our gems.

Elder abuse is becoming more prevalent and it is important that we learn to spot the warning signs and and to see what you can do to help.Elder abuse includes physical, emotional, or sexual harm inflicted upon an older adult, their financial exploitation, or neglect of their welfare by people who are directly responsible for their care. Our society needs to take greater cognizance of the need to be vigilant and to oppose elderly abuse .

A month dedicated to:

Recognise the positive impact made by the elders in our families, communities, and our country;
Identify the wealth of knowledge and experience they have accumulated over the years;
Provide avenues to showcase their skills and talents;
Collaborate with them to bring to fruition some visions still budding in their hearts and minds.

The elder's wellbeing is measured by his or her functionability and one of the most valuable assests for him /her is independence.
Keeping active and in good health will significantly aid an elder's ability to maintain independence. Lets help where we can.

The ageing of this generation over the next 20 years will lead to a particularly rapid increase in the number of older persons: between 2015 and 2035 according to Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. This should be a cause of concern if the rights of the elderly, the social infrastructures and policy frameworks are not in place. Perhaps a harmonized public policy framework across the OECS can be contemplated to address the growing needs of the elderly and older persons.
