📌A port-a-cath or is a small medical device under the skin, typically in the upper chest area, that provides reliable long-term venous access. It consists of a small reservoir connected to a thin, flexible catheter that is inserted into a large , usually the superior vena cava near the heart.
📌To use it, a nurse inserts a special needle a through the skin directly into the port's silicone membrane. This avoids repeated needle sticks in the arm and is particularly useful for , as it can safely administer potent medications and be used for blood draws.
