How to deal with noisy pupils ?
From time to time we -as teachers- may face some noisy pupils, some of them are old and some others are just messy and non-organized, they might speak a lot at any time, laugh or disturb the others. Here are some strategies to help the novice teachers controlling the noisy pupil :
- Use eye to eye contact, it is more effective than a million words, show him/her that you don’t like his/her behaviour but without talking.
- Knock ONLY one or two times on the desk, then give the talkative pupil something to do, don’t give them the chance to chat about things outside of lesson or make noise.
- If he/she said that he/she (CAN NOT) do any activity, bring him/her to the board and explain (again) further . then, ask him/her to try while the others are following, usually the noisy pupils start behave stupid and the others laugh, enjoy it with them but don’t lose the class’ control, after that –suddenly- go serious and explain more again.. then ask him/her to do the task and never let him/her go till he/she finishes the task correctly (Interaction is the key).
- You can ask the noisy pupil to come with you (alone) next to the door of the class in private, you will notice that he/she changes his/her behaviours 100%, remember that you are the teacher and he /she is just a teenager ; warn him/her in a very polite way, touch his shoulder from time to time (only boys) and don’t threat or hit him/her.
- Show them that you don’t like some behaviours but don’t get nervous, control yourself as much as you can.
- You can from time to time punish all the class pupils together (they control each other) , raise your voice but watch your language and select carefully your words.
- You can always control your pupils by marks but try to gain their trust before threatening them, deal with them as little sons and daughters, love them because (with love you will be able to do miracles).
- Remember their names, call everyone by his/her name and smile only to the good ones to motivate the others to look for your smile toward them too.
- When two pupils laugh without a reason : look at them, if they repeat it ask them to come one by one to the board to explain again what you were explaining before.
- Remember that it is not always the pupil’s mistake if your lesson goes boring, create new ways to motivate them to get involved and participate with you.
- You can punish your pupil by stopping talking to him/her for two or three days while you smile and deal with the others but don’t pass a week just to make him/her feel regret, talk about it then teach him/her a lesson about forgiveness.
- Always solve your problems with noisy pupils in the class, try to avoid going to the administration except in case you really need to see the parents of that pupil.
- Change the seats of the talkative pupils.
- Give everyone his/her right, do your duties in a perfect way and they MUST respect you and your word for that.
- Don’t react to every single detail, neglect some small mistakes but be aware about what they are doing, they are teenagers and need some space from time to time.
