Doctoral Writing: Practices, Processes and Pleasures [PDF]
by Susan Carter, Caroline Mignon LeRoy Guerin, Claire Aitchison

This book on doctoral writing offers a refreshingly new approach to help Ph.D. students and their supervisors overcome the host of writing challenges that can make—or break—the dissertation process. The book’s unique contribution to the field of doctoral writing is its style of reflection on ongoing, lived practice; this is more readable than a simple how-to book, making it a welcome resource to support doctoral writing. The experiences and practices of research writing are explored through bite-sized vignettes, stories, and actionable ‘teachable’ accounts.Doctoral Writing: Practices, Processes and Pleasures has its origins in a highly successful academic blog with an international following. Inspired by the popularity of the blog (which had more than 14,800 followers as of October 2019) and a desire to make our six years’ worth of posts more accessible, this book has been authored, reworked, and curated by the three editors of the blog and reconceived as a conveniently structured book.

How to correct the exam papers ?

Many teachers hate that moment when they find themselves obliged to correct the exam papers in a short period of time, many classes and many groups need to take care of, here I’m going to share with you some ideas to help you to correct your exam papers in well organized way and in a short period of time :
- Select the papers of your best pupils and leave them to the end, if you correct their papers first, you might feel bored later and have no motivation or curiousity to carry on with the rest of the weak pupils.
- Choose a calm place, no coffee or TV or music around, only you and your papers, a glass of water is good, put your phone away and deactivate the wifi till you finish your job.
- Talk to papers as if the pupil is listening to you, give your notes, laugh and shout at them and even say sorry for their mistakes, this way is a little bit insane but it’s useful and really makes it funny and easier.
- Don’t stop when you start, in some urgent cases leave but don’t take a long time away,.. try to finish all the other things before coming back to your papers.
- Don’t put the final mark directly, just correct in detail and keep the final mark till the end when you finish with all papers, copy them after that to your computer and make the necessary calculations.
- Correct the writing part in detail.. correct the spelling mistakes by red pen, and remember that giving good marks motivates you to correct more. but never give points for nothing, teachers must be fair and honest.
- Don’t correct your papers late at night, or when you feel tired, you'd better keep them to the early morning, revise them twice before the consultation session.
- Don't give extra points or punish pupils on the exam paper, it might make you unsatisfied with this job and feel bad every time you correct exam papers.

How do you control the class during test/exams ?
- You arrange the tables of the room in very organized way and never keep the pupils at their usual sits.. try to separate between friends and ban the use of phones or books or anything but the pen and the papers of answers.. (on the exam they may put all their extra tools on the teacher’s desk).
- You greet the pupils before giving them the exam papers.. and make sure you have full control of the class over them.. avoid talking to them or answer their questions as much as you can.. you take the control of any discussion by only the eye contact..
- Don't move a lot in the class.. check their hands and arms indirectly or friendly, and look for any notes on the board or the wall, or even at the papers thrown on the floor..
- Don’t allow any whispering during the exam.. don’t use your phone and try to avoid talking loudly to colleagues during the exam time.. it's better to stand or sit in one place and change it only one or two times.
- Don't allow the use of the bathroom only in some urgent cases.. you may ask for the help of your colleagues to watch the class in the urgent cases and protect your learners as learners safety is more important for sure.
- If something is not clear on the test or exam paper you try to explain it at the very beginning and don’t answer all their questions.. they need to rely on themselves to solve the exam problems without your aid..
- Don’t tell them about time till you reach the last half hour,.. try to write the time on the board politely and silently..
- Warn the cheater only one time before you put signature on his paper.. don’t make a scene or get nervous, it’s better to keep calm and punish the bad pupils by marks not by words nor violence.

How to deal with noisy pupils ?
From time to time we -as teachers- may face some noisy pupils, some of them are old and some others are just messy and non-organized, they might speak a lot at any time, laugh or disturb the others. Here are some strategies to help the novice teachers controlling the noisy pupil :

1- Use eye to eye contact, it is more effective than a million words, show him/her that you don’t like his/her behaviour but without talking.

2- Knock ONLY one or two times on the desk, then give the talkative pupil something to do, don’t give them the chance to chat about things outside of lesson or make noise.

3- If he/she said that he/she (CAN NOT) do any activity, bring him/her to the board and explain (again) further . then, ask him/her to try while the others are following, usually the noisy pupils start behave stupid and the others laugh, enjoy it with them but don’t lose the class’ control, after that –suddenly- go serious and explain more again.. then ask him/her to do the task and never let him/her go till he/she finishes the task correctly (Interaction is the key).

4- You can ask the noisy pupil to come with you (alone) next to the door of the class in private, you will notice that he/she changes his/her behaviours 100%, remember that you are the teacher and he /she is just a teenager ; warn him/her in a very polite way, touch his shoulder from time to time (only boys) and don’t threat or hit him/her.

5- Show them that you don’t like some behaviours but don’t get nervous, control yourself as much as you can.

6- You can from time to time punish all the class pupils together (they control each other) , raise your voice but watch your language and select carefully your words.

7- You can always control your pupils by marks but try to gain their trust before threatening them, deal with them as little sons and daughters, love them because (with love you will be able to do miracles).

8- Remember their names, call everyone by his/her name and smile only to the good ones to motivate the others to look for your smile toward them too.

9- When two pupils laugh without a reason : look at them, if they repeat it ask them to come one by one to the board to explain again what you were explaining before.

10- Remember that it is not always the pupil’s mistake if your lesson goes boring, create new ways to motivate them to get involved and participate with you.

11- You can punish your pupil by stopping talking to him/her for two or three days while you smile and deal with the others but don’t pass a week just to make him/her feel regret, talk about it then teach him/her a lesson about forgiveness.

12- Always solve your problems with noisy pupils in the class, try to avoid going to the administration except in case you really need to see the parents of that pupil.

13- Change the seats of the talkative pupils.

14- Give everyone his/her right, do your duties in a perfect way and they MUST respect you and your word for that.

15- Don’t react to every single detail, neglect some small mistakes but be aware about what they are doing, they are teenagers and need some space from time to time.

How to prepare your lesson before any class ?
(by Mr.Bounif Saber Mohamed Toufik)
You need to love your job to enjoy it, It will be somehow boring at the very beginning but you will feel the changes day after day ; here are some advice for my colleagues –especially the novice teachers- to prepare your lessons in a nice mood and make your job better with happiness and success :

- Give yourself about an hour or more (alone) at home to prepare your lessons far from social media, friends, phone and your lovely little kids if you have little angels at home.

- Prepare your lesson by talking to yourself ; imagine that you are in the class and start planning steps and tasks you need, start with the lesson objective, the framework and move to tasks according to your learners level.

- Use the school book, the guide and some documents from the internet but try every time to be creative, you can take from the other teachers’ lesson plans but focus on the needs of your own pupils.

- You can use the AI to prepare various tasks but there is no need to copy paste each task as it comes, you need to make the necessary changes at each step and each task.

- Use some visual aids, tricks and everything that might help you to make a simple active good lesson, interaction is the key to a successful class.

- Write down some vocabulary (according to the pupils’ level) to use during your class and ask your pupils to write them in their notebooks, vocabulary is so important in the education process.

- Don’t use two tasks or more in one aim, only one task is enough to serve the purpose but you need to repeat and revise what is necessary in TD class at least one time a week.

- Use colors and organise your work, the inspector or anyone of your colleagues might check them and the well-organised work will make you proud and satisfied with less critics and a positive spirit.

- Be sure that you really need to prepare your lesson before any class because some pupils will remember any random lesson or action from you, and you really need to give a perfect memory (for yourself and for them).

- Remember that God is here, every moment, everywhere. Thus, you need to do your job in a perfect way, for you and for your morals as a teacher and-sure- for those you love. (think about it).

- Take a break when you feel bored because when you do work in a bad mood you might hate it and –trust me- you don’t want to hate your job.

May Allah help you all my dear colleagues ^^ my respect and best regards _____ Mr.Bounif Saber Mohamed Toufik (Ain oussera).
