Step 01 – Preventing PPH
Oxytocin 10 IU IM/IV is the recommended uterotonic for preventing postpartum hemorrhage in all births.
Step 02 – Antenatal Care
Adopt the 8-contact ANC model: proven to reduce perinatal mortality and improve women’s experience compared to the
4-visit model.
Step 03 – Calcium Supplementation
In low-intake populations, give 1.5–2.0 g elemental calcium/day during pregnancy to lower the risk of pre-eclampsia.
Step 04 – Combination Therapy Insight
Oxytocin + misoprostol may reduce additional uterotonic need by 58 per 1000, but with more side effects — oxytocin
alone remains the first choice.
