From Paramedic to Counselling Therapist – This Is My Story
For years, the wail of sirens was the soundtrack of my life. As a paramedic, I learned to run toward chaos while others stepped back. I became fluent in split-second decisions, steady hands, and the unspoken language of people in their most vulnerable moments. I witnessed fear, trauma, relief, and loss—sometimes all within a single shift.
But what stayed with me wasn’t the adrenaline. It was the conversations.
Sitting in the back of the ambulance, I noticed how often people needed more than medical care. They needed reassurance. They needed to be heard. They needed someone who could sit in the discomfort with them and not turn away. I realized that my favourite part of the job wasn’t the heroics; it was the humanity.
Over time, those moments stirred something in me. I began wondering what happened to people after the emergency ended—after the monitors stopped beeping and the hospital doors closed behind them. Who helped them make sense of the emotional impact of what they’d been through?
And why, despite helping so many others, did I feel increasingly disconnected from my own wellbeing?
The truth is, the calls I attended weren’t the only emergencies. Quietly, I was carrying stories home—stories too heavy to put down. It took courage, and a bit of humility, to admit I needed a different kind of work. Work that didn’t just treat the immediate crisis, but helped people heal what came after.
So I stepped off the ambulance and into a classroom. I exchanged a uniform for textbooks, and later, for the calm of a counselling room. The pace changed, but the purpose didn’t: I was still helping people through their most difficult moments, only now I was doing it with deeper presence and a different kind of toolkit.
Becoming a counselling therapist has allowed me to witness healing in a new way. Instead of rushing toward a scene, I now sit with people as they sort through their stories—sometimes slowly, sometimes painfully, always bravely. I’ve learned that emotional emergencies don’t come with flashing lights, but they are just as real, and just as deserving of care.
Today, I carry my paramedic experience with me—not as weight, but as wisdom. It taught me compassion under pressure, how to stay grounded in crisis, and how to meet people exactly where they are. It also taught me the importance of listening—not just for symptoms, but for the story underneath.
My journey wasn’t a detour. It was a continuation.
From paramedic to counselling therapist, my work has always been about one thing:
helping people find safety, connection, and hope when they need it most.
