Introducing…Waffles! 🧇🐶💕 We recently added a new family member and it got me thinking about the parallels between having a puppy and coaching. The last one might surprise you!
1. Non judgmental listening. Waffles has started doing this super cute head tilt when I’m chatting to him, and research has repeatedly proven that spending time with a pet releases stress reducing hormones. In the same way, the coaching environment is a non judgmental space where I listen and empathise with whatever shows up, without judgement or giving advice.
2. Confidentiality. In the same way that a pet will never share what you tell them, part of my agreement with my clients is total confidentiality on my part, in terms of the content of the sessions, but I also never divulge who my clients are so you can be assured of total discretion and privacy.
3. Playfulness! One of my favourite ways that coaching is a little bit different from therapy is the possibility of letting go and playing in the sessions. This can be very freeing and I love that I often spend time laughing with my clients (crying shows up sometimes too, sometimes in the same session, which is also ok - everything is welcome). We use tools like embodiment and metaphor, and fun as a perspective to allow ourselves to play in the sessions. Did you know that children laugh around 300 times a day, and for most adults it’s only around 17 times? How would it feel to connect to that sense of playfulness that you had as a child for a few moments? ✨
