[ENG] At ViroFend Therapeutics we are in luck. Dr. Adolfo García Sastre and Miguel Ángel Ávila have received today the diploma for being two of the 35 mentors from all over Europe that have participated in the programme of the University of Salamanca that has served to connect the best postdoctoral researchers with experienced professionals.

👉 Dr. Adolfo García Sastre, a member of the ViroFend Therapeutics team, is a professor of medicine and microbiology and co-director of the Global Health & Emerging Pathogens Institute and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. His research focuses on improving vaccines against influenza viruses and investigating the interactions between these agents and their hosts, but he also investigates other viruses such as flaviviruses and coronaviruses.

👉 Miguel Ángel Ávila, General Director of ViroFend Therapetics, holds a degree in Engineering from the University of Salamanca, a master's degree in R&D management and an MBA in Business Management and Administration. He was also Cum Laude Award 2023 of Alumni-USAL in the biotech category, the only entrepreneur from Castile and Leon to take a biotech company through a clinical phase IIA in the last decades and to lead it to the EpM of the BME. He was also named Engineer of the Month.

El doctor Adolfo García Sastre y Miguel Ángel Ávila han recibido hoy el diploma al ser dos de los 35 mentores de toda Europa que han participado en el programa de la Universidad de Salamanca que ha servido para conectar a los mejores investigadores postdoctorales con profesionales experimentados.

👉 El doctor Adolfo García Sastre, miembro del equipo de ViroFend Therapeutics, es catedrático de medicina y microbiología y codirector del Global Health & Emerging Pathogens Institute y del Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai en Nueva York. Sus investigaciones se centran en mejorar las vacunas contra el virus de la gripe e investigar las interacciones entre estos agentes y sus huéspedes, aunque también investiga otro virus como el flavivirus o el coronavirus.

👉 Miguel Ángel Ávila, director general de ViroFend Therapetics, es Ingeniero por la Universidad de Salamanca, máster en gestión de I+D y MBA en Dirección y Administración de Empresas. Fue además Premio Cum Laude 2023 de Alumni-USAL en la categoría biotech, único empresario castellano y leonés en llevar a una biotecnológica a pasar una fase clínica IIA en las últimas décadas y en conducirla al EpM del BME. También fue designado como Ingeniero del Mes.

[ENG] Colorectal Cancer: A Top Global Challenge
Colorectal cancer ranks as the third most common cancer worldwide, accounting for 9.6% of all cancer cases and a similar mortality rate (9.3%), surpassed only by lung cancer. According to the WHO, incidence rates are expected to rise, and by 2040, global cases could reach nearly 3 million—with the United States, Europe, China, Japan, and Brazil together accounting for more cases than the rest of the world combined. This represents a serious social and health challenge, further complicated by persistent epidemiological disparities. While the OECD reports that annual spending on cancer overall stands at 449 billion euros, they warn that current trends are likely unsustainable over the long-term.
[ESP] Cáncer colorrectal: un desafío global prioritario.
El cáncer colorrectal se sitúa como el tercero más incidente a nivel mundial, representando el 9,6% de los casos de cáncer y una mortalidad similar (9,3%), solo superado por el cáncer de pulmón. Según la OMS, se estima que la tasa de incidencia aumentará y en 2040, la incidencia global ascenderá a casi 3 millones de casos, concentrando Estados Unidos, Europa, China, Japón y Brasil una suma superior a la del resto de países combinados. Esto supone una problemática social y sanitaria grave ya que además también existe desigualdad epidemiológica. El gasto invertido en cáncer en general anualmente, según la OCDE, es de 449.000M € aunque consideran que será insostenible a largo plazo.

[ENG] We have just received the fantastic news that the co-founder of Virofend, Dr. Sara Cuadrado-Castaño, will be the town crier for the Fairs and Festivities of Salamanca 2025. Congratulations on this great honour, which is a reward for her work and the pride she takes in being from Salamanca and having launched the Virofend project in her homeland. On 8 September we will be able to listen to her from the balcony of the Salamanca Town Hall.
[ESP] Acabamos de recibir la fantástica noticia de que la co fundadora de Virofend, la doctora Sara Cuadrado-Castaño, será la pregonera de las Ferias y Fiestas de Salamanca 2025. Enhorabuena por este gran honor que es un premio a su trabajo y al orgullo que le supone ser salmantina y haber puesto en marcha el proyecto de Virofend en su tierra. 🔬 [ENG] Santiago Ramón y Cajal anticipated cancer immunotherapy in his research ‘Organic defences in epithelioma and carcinoma’ (1896), where he proposed that manipulating the immune system would allow effective treatments to be implemented. His visionary legacy is fundamental to modern advanced oncological therapies, including CAR-T and the innovative virotherapy we are developing at ViroFend.
🔬 [ESP] Santiago Ramón y Cajal anticipó la inmunoterapia del cáncer en su obra de 1896, “Las defensas orgánicas en el epitelioma y carcinoma”, donde propuso que manipular el sistema inmunitario permitiría implementar tratamientos efectivos. Su herencia es fundamental para las terapias oncológicas modernas como CAR-T y otras innovaciones actuales, incluyendo la viroterapia que desarrollamos en nuestro equipo.

🎙️ [ENG] Virofend and Dr Sara Cuadrado-Castaño have been the protagonists of one of the reports broadcast by RNE Radio 5. ‘Thanks to the work that my team and I have done at Mount Sinai Hospital, we have enough results to justify a clinical phase 2A and that means going directly to human therapy. We are going to see how patients respond to our therapies almost three years in advance,’ says Dr Cuadrado-Castaño.

"Gracias al trabajo que hemos hecho mi equipo y yo en el hospital Monte Sinaí tenemos resultados suficientes para justificar una fase clínica 2A y eso implica ir directamente a hacer terapia en humanos.
