🔥🔬 A new study led by the lab of Leroy félix at the Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante (CSIC-UMH) reveals a key brain circuit for spatial memory, published in Cell Reports 🔝

The research identifies a previously unknown connection between the two hippocampal hemispheres: neurons from the right CA1 project to the left subiculum, forming a “bridge” essential for spatial orientation and memory-based decision-making.

Using optogenetics, the team showed that disrupting this circuit specifically impairs spatial memory and navigation, without affecting other functions such as anxiety or object recognition.

Importantly, this connection is altered in a mouse model of the 22q11.2 deletion, a genetic condition associated with schizophrenia, pointing to a potential mechanism underlying cognitive deficits in neuropsychiatric disorders.
