THE WORLD NEEDS ONE MILLION MORE MIDWIVES.
Together We Can Make It Happen!

We are excited to launch One Million More Midwives — a global petition to grow, support, and sustain the global midwifery workforce

Every two minutes, a woman dies from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Every 17 seconds, a baby is lost before birth. Each year, 2.3 million newborns die within the first 28 days of life. Caesarean birth rates are soaring to nearly 30% worldwide, often without improving outcomes, while obstetric violence and unmet family planning needs continue to harm women’s health and rights.

Midwives are the solution. Midwives save lives, protect rights, and improve the quality of care for women and newborns. Yet the world needs one million more midwives to truly fulfil global sexual and reproductive health needs. By growing the global midwifery workforce to meet the world’s needs, we could avert 67% of maternal deaths, 64% of newborn deaths, and 65% of stillbirths — saving over 4.3 million lives by 2035. For that to happen, midwives need to be recognised as vital healthcare providers, supported to work to their full scope of practice, equipped with the education and resources they need, and empowered through leadership.

That is exactly why, in partnership with the PUSH campaign, we are launching a global petition to call for One Million More Midwives. The petition will remain open until the last day of our Triennial Congress in Lisbon in June 2026, where we will deliver the signatures directly to global leaders. Advocacy will continue in-country through our Member Associations, who will use national-level signature data to press for action.

On World Postpartum Hemorrhage Day, we shine a light on the critical need for awareness and action. Postpartum hemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal mortality, reminding us that every birth carries risks. Together, we must advocate for better education, timely interventions, and accessible healthcare to ensure that no mother faces this danger alone. Every life matters; let's work towards a future where every mother returns home safe and healthy."
