🦠Key facts about Marburg virus disease (MVD)

Formerly known as Marburg haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans.

The average MVD case fatality rate is around 50%. Case fatality rates have varied from 24% to 88% in past outbreaks. Early supportive care with rehydration, and symptomatic treatment improves survival.

There are currently no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments for MVD, but a range of vaccines and drug therapies are under development.

Rousettus aegyptiacus, a fruit bat of the Pteropodidae family, is considered the natural host of Marburg virus.

The Marburg virus is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads among humans through human-to-human transmission

Atelectasis on lung ultrasound

Atelectasis is a frequent finding in lung ultrasound and represents partial or complete collapse of alveolar units. Ultrasound offers a highly sensitive bedside method for identifying these changes, particularly in critically ill patients. Collapsed lung tissue typically appears as a hypoechoic, tissue-like structure with preserved or reduced vascular markings. Dynamic air bronchograms suggest an obstructive process, while static bronchograms often indicate resorptive or compressive atelectasis.

Lung ultrasound enables accurate differentiation between atelectasis and consolidation, improves clinical decision-making, and supports real-time monitoring of therapeutic responses such as recruitment maneuvers, physiotherapy, or adjustments in ventilation strategies. Mastery of these sonographic patterns is essential for optimizing respiratory care.

:

- MASLD represents the updated terminology for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
- This condition involves abnormal fat accumulation in the liver unrelated to significant alcohol consumption.

:

- Point-of-care ultrasound serves as a valuable non-invasive tool for detecting and grading hepatic steatosis.
- The evaluation primarily relies on comparing liver echogenicity to the renal cortex and assessing deep structure visualization.

:
- In a normal liver, the parenchyma demonstrates homogeneous echogenicity similar to the renal cortex.
- The diaphragm appears clearly defined, and portal vein walls remain sharply visible without significant beam attenuation.

:
- Early steatosis manifests as subtle hepatic hyperechogenicity, creating a discernible contrast with the renal cortex.
- The diaphragm and portal vein walls remain adequately visualized despite increased parenchymal brightness.

:
- Moderate progression shows significant hepatic hyperechogenicity with emerging beam attenuation.
- The diaphragm begins to appear hazy, and portal vein walls become less distinct in deeper parenchymal regions.

:
- Advanced disease demonstrates marked hepatic brightness with substantial beam attenuation.
- The diaphragm becomes completely obscured, and portal vein walls are no longer distinguishable in deep liver segments.

:
- The progressive increase in liver-kidney contrast, coupled with diminishing visualization of deep structures, provides a reliable framework for MASLD grading.
- These sonographic features enable clinicians to make rapid assessments during point-of-care ultrasound examinations.
