At the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026, I shared a simple conviction: Africa is making strides, the priority now is to sustain and scale this impact by investing in our systems, aligning health security with climate action, and supporting what Africa produces.

Through the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty ( ) agenda, we are advancing a bold, Africa-led vision—driven by strong leadership, strengthened systems, and growing local manufacturing capacity across the continent.

African Vaccination Week 2026 ends today. Our promise does not.

Every child reached is a life protected. Every dose delivered is a future made safer. Every community immunized makes our continent stronger.

With the launch of the Continental Immunization Strategy, Africa CDC, African Union Member States and partners are setting a shared path to close immunization gaps, reach underserved communities, and build epidemic-ready health systems.

To Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, thank you for standing with us. Your partnership saves lives.

The week ends. The work continues. Together, until every African child is protected.

At , I signed an MoU with Hon. Aden Bare Duale Hon. Aden Duale, Cabinet Secretary for Health, representing the Government of Kenya.

Since 2017, Kenya has been home to the Eastern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre. This new agreement accelerates its full operationalisation. Through this MoU, Kenya will provide 10 acres of land and a USD 2 million contribution, alongside joint resource mobilisation, to drive the Centre’s development.

This partnership is a powerful testament to our shared vision. Africa CDC was created by Member States, for Member States, and Kenya’s leadership is both symbolic and practical—proving that regional health security is built through collective ownership and investment. # HealthSecurity

Today in Nairobi, I was joined by Hon. Aden Duale, Cabinet Secretary for Health of Kenya, Ministers of Health from across the continent, and partners for the launch of the Continental Immunisation Strategy (CIS).

The CIS is Africa’s response to closing equity gaps, reaching zero-dose children, and integrating immunisation within resilient primary health care systems.

Immunisation has saved more than 50 million lives in Africa over the past five decades. We know what works. Now we must scale it.

With the support of UNICEF, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, this Strategy marks a shift toward stronger country ownership, sustainable financing, and long-term health security.

Every child deserves the protection vaccines provide.

Africa carries 22% of the global disease burden, yet accounts for just 1% of global health expenditure. At the same time, external support is shrinking, debt is rising, and climate risks are accelerating.

This morning at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Nairobi, I convened African Ministers of Health, development partners, and financing experts for the Africa CDC Ministerial Dialogue on Health Financing.

The discussion was clear: the tools are within reach. Domestic resources, efficiency gains, debt-for-health swaps, and the African Sovereign Health Fund can help turn commitments into results.
This is what Africa’s Health Security and Sovereignty agenda is about, practical solutions, difficult choices, and real impact.

Every investment must deliver better health and wellbeing for our people.
-------

On the margins of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026 in Nairobi, I was pleased to launch the African High-Level Ministerial Committee on Global Health Architecture Reform (AHLMC).

This Committee brings together Ministers of Health and Finance to strengthen Africa’s voice, align our priorities, and engage more effectively in shaping global health governance and financing.
At a time of shifting global dynamics and declining external support, Africa must act with greater coordination and purpose. Fragmentation is no longer an option.

Equity must be at the centre of global health. Access to vaccines, technologies, and financing should not be determined by geography, but by need. We welcome partnership, grounded in mutual respect, shared responsibility, and alignment with Africa’s priorities.

This is about leadership, ownership, and delivering results that improve the health and wellbeing of our people.

-------

Today at the opening of the World Health Regional Summit in Nairobi, I shared a simple but urgent truth: we cannot talk about Africa’s sovereignty while mothers and children are still dying from preventable causes. This must change.

We have made progress in health security and local manufacturing, but we can go further. Africa has what it takes to lead by investing in our systems, trusting our own solutions, and working together.

From this World Health Summit, we know what needs to be done; we must fix our systems, reduce inefficiencies, and take full ownership of our health agenda.

Africa must move from dependency to leadership, from promises to action.

--------

I landed today, 24 April, in Lagos, where I had a warm meeting with my brother Aliko Dangote, accompanied by my Senior Advisor, Prof. Benedict Oramah.

We discussed advancing Africa’s health security and sovereignty, including strengthening local manufacturing, catalyzing private sector investment, and building resilient health systems across the continent.

Every US$1 invested in immunization returns up to US$40.

Under-immunization costs Africa US$20–30 billion a year. This African Vaccination Week, my message is simple: immunization is not an expenditure. It is an investment in sovereignty, stability, and growth.

Vaccines protect families. Vaccines protect economies. Vaccines protect Africa's future.

It was a pleasure to meet this morning with H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

We discussed a range of priorities, including his new role as the African Union Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, a timely and important responsibility for our continent.
Innovation will be essential to Africa’s health future. As we face evolving challenges, we must harness the power of AI and digital technologies to strengthen our health systems, expand access, and improve health outcomes for all.

Africa CDC welcomes Ethiopia’s leadership and commitment to sharing its experience. By working together, we can ensure that innovation translates into practical, inclusive, and equitable impact.

I look forward to strengthening our collaboration to advance a healthier, more resilient Africa.
