A Year in Review:

As we look back on the year, the launch of the African Epidemic Fund stands out as a turning point, strengthening Africa’s ability to respond rapidly to outbreaks through African-led financing and decision-making.

This year reaffirmed a clear shift: from reacting late to being prepared early.

A year in review:

Africa CDC has supported African Union Member States in coordinating a unified voice in the Pandemic Treaty process.

Over the past three and a half years, this collaboration has focused on ensuring Africa’s needs—including equitable access to vaccines and therapeutics—are reflected in the agreement.

Particular attention has been given to advancing the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) agreement to promote fair participation and capacity building.

21/12/2025

Africa is strengthening its preparedness by learning from experience — across outbreaks, countries, and systems.

From leadership at the national level to stronger continental surveillance, these lessons are shaping how the continent prepares for future epidemics and pandemics.

Marburg virus disease is rare but highly deadly.

It causes severe haemorrhagic fever and can spread quickly without early detection.
🔹 Marburg does not spread through the air
🔹 It spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces
🔹 Early symptoms include sudden fever, severe headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, and extreme weakness

If you experience symptoms or have been exposed, seek medical care immediately.

Early action saves lives. Prevention starts with awareness.

This week, the Africa CDC Southern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre (SARCC) supported as it took an important step toward establishing its National Public Health Institute (NPHI).

SARCC coordinated a high-level benchmarking visit by a Zimbabwean delegation to the Zambia National Public Health Institute, providing an opportunity to learn from Zambia’s experience and practical steps in NPHI establishment. The delegation highlighted the value of South–South collaboration in strengthening public health institutions across the region.

Africa CDC, through SARCC, continues to support Member States in advancing coordinated regional action and strengthening national public health systems in line with Africa’s health security priorities.
