Wollo University’s Health Next Seminar Series VI on NCD Prevention: The Silent Killers!
===============//===============

The Health Next (HN) Seminar Series VI will spotlight the growing challenge of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Ethiopia:
“From Plates to Pathways: Navigating Nutritional Transition and Biochemical Evidence to Strengthen Future NCD Prevention in Ethiopia.

”The seminar focuses on nutritional transition and biochemical evidence as critical tools for effective NCD prevention strategies.

The seminar will be delivered by Mr. Altaseb Beyene, a Biochemist from the School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Wollo University.

The presentation will explore how nutritional transition, driven by urbanization, lifestyle changes, and globalization of food systems, has contributed to the rising burden of NCDs such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and obesity. Understanding what is happening “on the plate” is essential to explain changing disease patterns and to design effective, culturally appropriate prevention strategies.

Beyond dietary patterns, the presentation will highlight the role of biochemical evidence in revealing how nutritional changes translate into disease “pathways.” Biochemical markers help identify early metabolic disturbances long before clinical disease develops. Integrating biochemical data with dietary and lifestyle information allows for improved risk stratification, early detection, and monitoring of NCDs, thereby strengthening both individual-level clinical care and population-level surveillance.

The HN Seminar Series VI will be held on February 27, 2026, at 9:00 AM, bringing together academics, health professionals, researchers, and students. The seminar aims to foster dialogue on how changing dietary patterns and emerging biochemical indicators can inform evidence-based NCD prevention strategies and policy actions in Ethiopia, emphasizing the importance of linking nutrition, metabolism, and disease prevention to reduce the future burden of NCDs.
