🩷 For generations, women have supported each other through childbirth, offering comfort, strength, and shared wisdom. The presence of other women -whether trusted friends, family members, doulas or midwives - during birth creates a space of reassurance, helping the mother feel safe and empowered.
‌
When women stand together, they honor the power and beauty of birth in a way that’s both comforting and transformative.
‌
Us three women - Jenna, Rosalia and Jaana - are here to support you in your birthing journey in every way we can. We have all been there and have a fairly good idea what kind of support you need 💜
‌
(Of course men are wonderful birthing partners too and have their own very special role but more about that later 😉)

As a first-time mom, it’s natural to feel uncertain about where this journey will lead…🤷‍♀️

For a mother who has given birth before, the experience of deepening her ”birth bubble” might already be familiar, even as the intensity of labor increases. She has some idea of what it feels like to turn inward and let the birth process take over, while still finding a sense of safety and calm. The intensity does build as birth progresses, but this doesn’t necessarily mean suffering.

Suffering isn’t a given at any point in birth; the priority is always to help the birthing mother manage each stage.🌱The mind’s power is the primary support, and other tools simply complement it. The amazing thing is that the birthing body and mind have an incredible capacity for this. Unfortunately, this potential often isn’t nurtured in traditional prenatal care.

If you’re interested in tapping into your own inner strength, you’re in the right place 💖 So glad you’re here!

The first step is creating a sense of safety for yourself so that birth hormones can flow freely through your body. If you’d like support with this, comment ”5steps” on this post or send me a message!

Or have you already experienced your first birth? Do these feelings sound familiar to you? What would you add to this? 🤗🤗

In challenging situations like childbirth, protective barriers can rise up.

We’re generally not accustomed to ”just letting go and surrendering to our emotions and bodies,” especially in the presence of strangers. Quite the opposite—we tend to hide our feelings and shrink ourselves, avoiding being fully seen, heard, smelled, and felt. Each of us has our own protective barrier surrounding us.

Many new mothers realize after their first childbirth that they protected themselves or acted in ways during labor that are typical of how they handle other areas of life.

Common behaviors that we work through with doula clients include:

- People-pleasing (making it hard to express one’s own needs or wishes during childbirth).
- Perfectionism (which can make childbirth feel like a stressful task to be completed).
- Catastrophic thinking (if unaddressed, it can be heavy during pregnancy and create a lot of tension in the body during labor, even causing feelings of panic).
- Lack of self-worth (making it difficult to care for oneself or listen to one’s own body).
- Victim mentality (feeling incapable or that all challenges fall on one’s shoulders).
- Denial (the classic “the midwives will tell me” mindset, which can lead to a sense of lack of control or understanding of what’s happening—factors that strongly predict a poor birth experience).

A mother who is giving birth again has likely already encountered these patterns during her first labor or, ideally, even during childbirth preparation—enabling her to be more aware of them in the process. Only behaviors that we are aware of can be changed. Self-awareness is key here, and childbirth preparation plays a crucial role in strengthening it.

Childbirth is not only about welcoming new life but also about rediscovering ourselves. By recognizing and working through these protective patterns, we can open up to the deep strength within us. 🧡 Embracing self-awareness and support can turn the birth journey into one of empowerment and healing. 🌱✨ Have you noticed similar patterns in your own life or birth experiences?

The First Pitfall: The power of childbirth can be surprising, even when you know it’s an incredibly intense experience. In a first birth, there’s often a moment of surprise: ”Wow, this is WHAT it’s like?!”

When this hits a first-time mother, it can be challenging. There are specific stages in labor when the intensity typically increases – it’s good for both the birthing person and their partner to be aware of these. Then, when the intensity peaks or even a moment of despair arises, it can turn into a victory: ”Actually, this intense power is the best thing; it shows everything is going incredibly well!” It’s much easier to let go and trust when the strong contractions become welcomed and positive. A trusted partner or doula is an invaluable support here.

However, there are important nuances, such as recognizing that if the birthing person’s experience shifts from coping to suffering, the form of support needs to change as well. Having a familiar person who knows how to support you helps in recognizing this point too.

That’s why I often say that if I had to choose between coaching the partner or the birthing person, I might choose the partner. With the right support, the birthing person can surrender to the flow of labor – but without a supportive and loving atmosphere, that’s much harder.

This is why the Relaxed Birth training has evolved over the years to offer broader support and tools for partners as well. Comment or send a DM with ”relax 101” to get started right away 🌟🌱

When it comes to managing pain during childbirth, informed choices are key. One option many birthing moms consider is the epidural.
‌
An epidural is a form of regional anesthesia that can provide significant relief during labor. It works by blocking pain signals in the lower body, which can help the mum to have a rest and feel better about the birthing experience. However, it’s important to weigh both the benefits and potential risks.
‌
In our course, ”Relaxed in Birth,” we empower you with the knowledge to make the best decision for your unique situation. What makes our course special is the combination of effective (deep) relaxation techniques and comprehensive education about the physiology of birth. These two go hand in hand - knowledge brings safety and when you feel safe you can relax and trust the process.
‌
Ultimately, when you birth your baby you are the one in charge of the process. That’s why it is a very good idea to be prepared and also understand how an epidural might impact your birth plan. (Remember you can always discuss your options with the birthing staff).

✨ The journey of birth is profound, and the words we choose can have a transformative impact. Affirmations like ”wonderful” and ”you got this” are not just phrases; they are reminders of strength and resilience. At the heart of this is the need to feel seen, heard, and supported.
‌
Having a partner who echoes these affirmations and is there for you can create an incredible sense of safety and encouragement when you are giving birth.
‌
We invite you to explore the power of affirmations, partner support - and so much more - in our new online course, Relaxed in Birth (now with limited-time reduced opening offer!)

Which of these would feel good to you?

That your partner could easily:

• Meet you in a way that makes you feel seen, but still provide comfort and reassurance.

• Help with communication to the midwife, so you don’t have to understand alone what’s happening, what’s being suggested, or what’s being discussed.

• Act as a messenger to the midwife about your wishes and also understand why certain things are important to you during childbirth.

• Relieve pressure and pain during contractions with words, simple physical techniques, and by instilling confidence in you.

• Help you relax so that it’s easier for you to give birth.

• Assist you in recovering from each contraction, allowing you to relax more deeply and regain strength during each break, accompanied by a sense of well-being.

• Understand their key role in promoting the flow of the love hormone oxytocin and the feel-good hormone endorphin.

• Remind you to eat, drink, and go to the bathroom.

• Offer you something to drink between contractions.

• Take care of themselves so that you don’t have to worry about them.

• Completely trust you.

• Understand the logic of childbirth and how to be in sync with your birthing body.

• Maintain the calmness of the environment.

• Let you know that you’re having a contraction if someone accidentally speaks to you during it.

• Admire the work you’re doing during the birth.

• Focus entirely on you.

• Be able to give you space if you need it.

Is there such a “super partner”? Yes, and it’s not even very complicated. All it takes is some level of communication, and hands can be helpful too 🤲✨✨Maybe that’s why the partner section is one of the most praised parts of the Relaxed in Birth course ❤️

P.S. What would you add to this list?

Let’s look at the pros and cons of how to push your baby out:
‌Staff coached pushing Pros - If you are not sure when and how to push, staff and supporters coach you. It can give a feeling of more control by being guided. Cons - It can be tiring if pushing goes on for a while. Holding your breath can lead to reduced oxygen for you and baby. This can impact on cardiac output and blood pressure which can in turn affect how baby is coping. A less pleasant side effect of forced pushing is bloodshot eyes and broken capillaries in your face. There can be potentially more perineal damage as you may be so focused on pushing that you bypass the natural instinct to ease the head out and instead forcibly push the head out. Caregivers are more likely to use their hands to assist in rotating baby as they move out of the va**na increasing the likelihood of tearing and damage to the perineum.
‌Birther led pushing-Pros - It is less tiring for you and baby. You are in control of following your body’s own pushing urge and rhythm. Staff and support people can encourage you to follow your body’s urges. No purple faced pushing means there is loads more oxygenated blood going to baby, the uterus and the perineum reducing the likelihood of damage. Cons - Without coaching you may feel overwhelmed or concerned with how you should be pushing and second guess your innate wisdom.
‌Birther led breathing baby down and out Pros - You are in the driver’s seat and you hold the controls. Staff and support people give you space to follow you instincts. Less energy is expended and oxygenation is maximised for you and baby. Minimal if any perineal injury or swelling. Cons - Takes incredible control to focus solely on breathing baby down and resisting the urge to bear down. Staff are not always supportive of this method and it may lead to increased tension and nervousness in the room. You may feel you didn’t do it ‘right’ or succeed if you do follow your urges to push.

Informed consent means you understand your rights, you understand your options and how they may benefit you or be an actual risk to you. You know safe and proven alternatives and you are not coerced into making a decision that does not feel right for you. This can be difficult to do, especially if your care provider is not entering into a respectful conversation that informs you of all this. When you are asked to just agree because they said so, and you question or request not to do something, you are labelled difficult and spoken to differently too.Wanting information to give informed consent is not being difficult and you don’t have to be manipulated into making a choice that doesn’t sit well with you.Do you feel confident asking questions and getting answers from your care provider? Let me know in the comments what troubles you about this aspect of your care!
