A recent study revealed that in both boys and girls, motor skills had a positive indirect association with math outcomes through visuospatial working memory. Also self-reported physical activity had a borderline indirect positive association with math outcomes through visuospatial working memory.

A recently published Schools on the Move follow-up study shows that

🏃‍♀️ girls are less physically active during the school day than boys; during leisure time, the differences diminish
🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ weekend days were less active than weekdays for both boys and girls.

In the Finnish Schools on the Move programme, many schools have been able to increase girls’ physical activity by providing them with girls-only activities, like a separate gym for dance practices at recess.

A recently published follow-up study showed that changes in physical activity during the teen years are different between the sexes.

“Making school longer doesn’t have core results in academic achievement,” said Antti Blom, Programme Director, Finnish Schools on the Move programme at the Finnish National Agency for Education.

“Our finding is that short school days with short recess times and the practical recess, promote wellbeing in school and enjoyment of the school day.”

In Metsokangas comprehensive school in Oulu, Finland physical activity is a natural part of the school day. Pupils have an active role in organizing recess activities. A vast majority of pupils also come to school by foot or by bike throughout the year.

The Schools on the Move concept consists of different services related to making the school day more active. These services have been divided into three areas:

🏘 creating an active culture
👩‍🏫 developing the pedagogy
🏃‍♂️ increasing movement.

We and our partners have years of experience and expertise in the holistic development of the school culture and the skills of teachers, monitoring the progress of the change, measuring the amount of physical activity and adding movement to the school day with the help of digital solutions, training contents, development of learning environments and sports equipment.
