Tracy van Leyden Interpreter

Tracy van Leyden Interpreter I have a BSc Hons in Modern Languages (French and German) and I've been living and working in France continuously since 1989.

I'm also a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. I am first and foremost an interpreter French/English/French. You say something to me in English and I can spout it in French and then reverse the process for the French person you're trying to communicate with. I don't do translations which are written documents reproducing a document in another language - I find it boring and there are p

lenty of websites that provide this service (Lol and I don't mean Google Translate!!!)

I also provide bilingual secretarial services - phone-calls, navigating websites, dealing with the French authorities for building permits, cartes de séjour, carte vitale, carte grise. I have accompanied clients as an interpreter for appointments with solicitors, doctors, architects, lawyers, mayors and lots and lots of officialdom. I love what I do: its both helpful and interesting - I hope I get to help you out. I charge by the hour and if you need me to travel I have prices for 5-20km and above 20kms - much further than 30kms and I'll have to think about it :D

Having a little trouble with my newsletter subscribers - some of you have "accidentally" unsubscribed yourselves - Lol you might, of course, just be being polite. Anyway I can't put you back on the list so if you want to resubscribe just go to my interpreter page and I've pinned the Newsletter subscription to the top. For those of you who can't be bothered with that here's the link 🤣

Newsletter May 2025
So here we are almost mid taxes season and gold stars to all of you I’ve already sorted! Special mention to Sue (you know who you are :D ) who had everything laid out beautifully on her dining table and all I had to do was dive right in!!

Just so that everyone is clear - I am not an accountant. That means that whilst I can usually help with ordinary tax returns income from abroad, auto entrepreneurs, and regular pensions - what I can’t do is go from a standing start when someone has drawn down from a pension. The main reason for this is that French pensions and UK pensions don’t seem to work in the same way and neither do their tax systems. I did help someone last week but that was because her financial advisor had told her where to declare her money on the French tax form. The UK pension system seems so complicated - a dear friend tried to explain it to me the other day and started spouting letters at me and my head nearly exploded. So, here’s the thing, I can only help you if you know what sort of a pension you have and my take home from all of this is that before you draw down any of your stashes of money for a rainy day you take advice from an accountant. Her reccommendation was to contact Blevins Franks https://www.blevinsfranks.com/ who are accountants and seem to specialise in us J***y foreigners. I’ve just had a quick shufty at their website and downloaded their free guide about tax in France - you never know when these things might be helpful.

I still haven’t read all of Connexion’s tax guide but it has turned out pretty useful since I now understand how the tax banding system works and how that relates to tax credits from abroad - go me! Usually when you do your tax declarations on line at the end of it a pdf pops up telling you how much you’re going to have to pay in tax. Well, last week it mysteriously didn’t and good old Connexion gave me all the info for me to be able to work it out. By the way Connexion’s tax guide also has a few pages about pensions but again the general advice is to ask an accountant. Of course another option is to ask the French tax authorities - unlike in the UK the French tax man is very accessible, you can make an appointment on line and depending what your question is you may even be able to see them quite close to you - I discovered the other day that the taxman comes to my nearest village every once in a while! Who knew?

So the thought for the day is: if you’re considering getting a lump sum out of some sort of pension pot, before doing so, get informed as to the tax consequences before you do it, that way you may be able to avoid any surprises further down the road.

On a lighter note - I have now added bra fitting to my list of services offered!!!

Firstly my apologies for the weird link earlier on this week - that was me trying to post my newsletter email onto here - anyway here's what I have to say about this year's tax season - lol pretty basic but useful to know!
So, I’m back having had a lovely time in Blighty and am now girding myself up for this year’s tax season - I hear a general virtual groan out there. The impots.gouv.fr website should be open for business on the 10th April 2025 for your income tax declarations relative to your income in 2024.
Depending on where you live the deadlines are different. Anybody living in the Morbihan the deadline is the 5th June 2025 anyone in the Côtes d’Armor its the 28th May 2025 for on line declarations.
Just in case anyone not local is reading this here’s how they split up France for tax declaration deadlines:
Departments 1 - 19 - 22 May 2025
Departments 20 - 54 - 28 May 2025
Departments 55 - 974 and 976 - 5th June 2025
The deadline for paper declarations is 20th May 2025
Here’s the exchange rate I shall be using 1 divided by 0,84915=€1,17764 so that’s £1 = €1,17764.
As far as I can tell - they’ve up the tax allowance by 1.8% to allow for inflation and you’ll need to be more precise when declaring cleaners and gardeners if you get a tax credit for that.
Don’t forget that if you travel for a charity you’re volunteering for you may be able to get that deducted but you need the charity to sign off on your kilometers.

Thank you Harry Shindler .

When I was about 10 years old I remember my grandfather telling me that I must vote, even if I only voted for the good-looking one, because women died to get me my vote. I moved to France in 1988 and at the time I was told that I could only vote in the UK for 25 years, which seemed like forever back then. I didn’t vote because I thought it a bit of a cheek since I no longer lived there and what went on there was really no longer any of my business. Until, of course, the Brexit vote - that’s when I found out that somewhere along the line the 25 years had been shrunk to 15! I wouldn’t have been able to vote anyway since by Brexit time I’d been living in France for over 30 years. Right up until Brexit I consoled myself with my local vote here in France and the European elections. So, its been a few years now that I have been completely disenfranchised!

I had heard that the UK had had its knuckles rapped about this particular bit of naughtiness and that someone had taken them to court and won. That was Harry Shindler who fought for 20 years to get his British vote back - and finally won. Although Harry got to see the legislation pass through parliament he didn’t get to vote before he died at the ripe old age of 101. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Harry.

I have just registered to vote on line - and have my parents to thank for keeping all my early documents for me - whilst rummaging around I managed to find an Official Poll Card from Birmingham District Council from 1983, addressed to me with my maiden name, living in a tower block that has since been demolished at a remarkably minimalist postcode that couldn’t be recognised by the site. Also found a letter from the Department of Social Security telling me about my National Insurance contributions for 1988/1989 (equally minimalist!) which obligingly gave me my NI number. So thank you Mum and Dad for saving these bits of historic necessity for me.

I have had to register for a postal vote because my proxy would need to vote in Birmingham - if anyone is interested the deadline for applying for a postal vote is the 17th April this year… so not much time left - Thank you Richard for your timely nudge.

I’m still waiting to hear if my application for a postal vote has been accepted but the emails from Birmingham City Council have been very prompt this far and I’m ever the optimist.

Good luck anyone else who’s planning to do this and get your skates on!

Thank you Harry, Ruth, Brian and Richard.❤

Lots of love
Tracy
