Ujjayi « Ocean Breath » for summer relaxation: I love the ocean and the sound of the ocean is wonderfully healing. The breathing practice of Ujjayi (victorious breath) is done by contracting the throat and makes a breathy "Darth Vader" sound! but I like to think of it as the ocean in my head. At first you might feel it is uncomfortable so only do it a little at a time. After some practice you can feel it deeply relaxing the in and out like the ocean tide.

From stress relief to improving concentration, many believe this breathing exercise, common in yoga practices, can do it all.

Happy solstice everyone! This is my favorite time of year when we have the most sun to give us positive energy. Yesterday my yoga teacher had us breathe with the “lotus mudra” opening and closing our fingers with our breath. It was magical! And a wonderful way to celebrate nature and breathing together (and not do 100 sun salutations!)

20 minutes of yoga day = a little bit brighter and lighter! I know this sounds like one of those impossible ads for some exercise package that you don't want but I've personally seen and felt the results: it doesn't take much to feel just that little bit better but you have to make time to stretch / move. I'm teaching "lunch yoga" again to the teachers at my school and I hope to convince them that only a half an hour can make a complete difference to the rest of the day. I'm noticing that doing yoga during the day at work is more helpful / critical than teaching in a yoga studio. I'm trying to build a safe relaxing place to breath even during the busy work day, demonstrating that just 20-30 minutes can give the inner reset to finish the day a bit more positively. The main obstacle is devoting that time to yourself when you have too much to do but the short time spend is so much more valuable. So promise yourself to find 20 minutes in the middle of your busiest day and see how improves your mood and interactions with others (guaranteed by 'YogisRus" -- or your money back!)

Happy Easter: Time to do Egg pose! This is a fun rolling pose on the back with your head tucked in. This is a nice massage for the back but only do this on a soft surface. Keeping your head tucked in you can increase your rocking until almost upright. Advanced yogis come to standing with momentum (and strong core, thighs and knees!)

You are a FLOWER! In Spring it's wonderful to imagine you are a flower with your spine as a growing green stem and your head and face a big open daisy or sunflower - this can make us all smile while doing yoga. ...But more seriously - your spine really IS the "green stem" of your body and we should treat it as our "fountain of youth". Every day move your spine in the ways it moves naturally: twists, forward fold, arching, crunching, bending side to side like a "c" with your spine. Doing this a few times a day in different body postures (sitting, standing, lying down) can improve your mobility and actually give you more energy (and less aches and pain if done kindly and carefully). So have fun "being a flower" and grow your green stem!

Happy spring equinox! Where ever you are in the world, our days have become equalised, day and night. We feel more energetic and more positive generally. Take a moment to notice how the changing light and colours are affecting you. Surround yourself with flowers, outside and in (even pictures can make a difference). Allow yourself to bloom!

Ready for Spring? Get your feet ready to jump! Yoga is wonderful for keeping our feet supple because we practce barefoot. We need to keep strengthening our natural arch or they slowly fall causing foot / archilles pain. Balancing on one foot and/or raising up on our toes in practice can help keep our feet strong. Also mini-jumps from the back of the mat to the front - with a good padded yoga mat and well bent knees for a soft landing can be very good for strengthening our feet, knees and thighs but must be soft and slow - no stomping! here's the internet's favorite yoga teacher Adriene leading a foot-loving class.

Be Zen! That's a common phrase but what does it really mean? I've been studying "Questions to a Zen master" by Taisen Deshimaru = the first to bring Zen to the west (Paris 1967) and I was struck by the simple beauty of his calligraphy (I've attached here along with my own clumsy drawings). It brought home for me that it's in the practice without any expectation that "satori" is possible (symbolized by the shadows in my drawings) but the difficult point is to let go of any expectation and just "sit" without any judgement or goal. This is the same for yoga = practice not to make perfect but just to do, everyday, living with our breath.

Happy February! Shake up your practice with a bit of fun warming core pose: Donkey kicks = this is not hand stand but little kicks in down dog. you can start with one leg at a time or tiny double feet jumps. Do only a few at first - you’ll notice how quickly it warms you up and makes your heart race - just what we need sometimes to chase the cold and gloom away.

How to do a donkey kick! Trick is: draw your knees into your chest, rather than taking your feet overhead. More like an inverted navasana than handstand!Wan...

Happy New Year to all yogis! Don't fall into the "too hard to stick to it" resolutions. Instead make tiny "reachable" goals this year. My most valuable advice (to myself first of all!): Change it up! Yoga is a discipline and a life practice but that doesn’t mean you should be strict with yourself. I really believe this so I try to get on my mat no matter what: injuries, high and low days, rain or shine. This is a challenge but I have stuck with it for almost 20 years anywhere from 15 minutes to and hour everyday. Since my bike injury last year yoga has been my mental and physical savior. The key is not to approach your mat with an overly strict mentality but hold yourself to some core movements to do everyday and to modify for low / cold / busy / tired days. I have four different sequences I choose from : my high octane sun salutations (that I now can do after a year since my injury), my modified slower version with all the poses but much slower and not as deep, my stretching only session for those days I feel I can hardly move, and finally my playful yoga where I do anything and everything out of order and whatever way I feel like doing. This also reflects in the music to accompany; strict only bells and chanting or silence, and on the more playful days I can be accompanied by upbeat classical or yoga music. My advice from the heart: Keep coming back to your mat everyday and lay the foundations for a life practice to support you through the hard stuff! HUGS!
