Happy new month! ✨

In case you need a little push, reminder or permission to sit back, slow down and enjoy life as it comes, Billy Joel’s song “Vienna” might help!

Although it’s an old song, I only listened to it for the first time a few months ago and have been listening to it on repeat ever since whenever I feel the need to rush or spread myself too thin.

The song also inspired me to take a long hiatus to focus on my wellbeing and relationships.

While I love applying psychology and neuroscience-based interventions, sometimes, the best solution is the most simple one — listening to a good song that inspires and evokes positive feelings. ❤️

Here are excerpts of the song and my favourite lines:

🎵 Slow down, you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile

🎶 Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do
And only so many hours in a day

🎵 Slow down; you're doin' fine
You can't be everything you want to be before your time

🎶 Too bad, but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need

🎵 Slow down, you crazy child
And take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile
It's alright; you can afford to lose a day or two — When will you realize Vienna waits for you?

How about you? Is there a song that you find meaningful and has moved and inspired you? Please do share! 😊

Are you prioritising ?

I’m a huge advocate for practising and prioritising self-care because it has an enormous impact on our wellbeing. Without it, we will feel depleted, unbalanced and burnt out (even anxious and depressed).

However, lately, because of all the changes and fast-paced transitions that happened during the past few months in my life, I have noticed my wellbeing suffer. And I realised that it’s because I’ve been neglecting taking care of myself — I haven’t been allotting ample time for self-care.

Whether you’re experiencing a lot of changes in your life (even positive change can be stressful), going through transitions, or facing a lot of challenges right now, remember that it is when we are going through difficulties and stress that we need self-care the most.

What forms of self-care will you be practising this week?

For me, I’ll be taking time to and , spend more time in nature and allot more time for play, pleasure and connection. ❤️🌹

and I wish you a happy and healthy week ahead! ☺️

Happy Australia Day! 🎉🇦🇺

Although I deeply miss my family and friends in the Philippines (and I can’t wait to come back and visit!), I’m very grateful to call Australia my home.

I’m grateful because migrating here has been a catalyst for positive change and transformation — not because it was fun and easy all the time, but because of all the challenges, pain and suffering that I faced, endured and overcame.

And in facing these adversities, I had to birth a better, stronger, and wiser person in order to not just survive but thrive in a foreign land.

So whether you’re a fellow migrant, or someone facing difficulties in your homeland, take heart and believe that things will get better soon.

Let the hard and painful situations and circumstances teach you valuable life lessons and allow them to change you for the better. (In positive psychology, we refer to this positive psychological change as post-traumatic growth).

✨ Have you experienced post-traumatic growth? How did adversities change you for the better? Who did you become in the process? Please do share!

Wishing you all a wonderful, happy, and healthy week ahead! ❤️

And just like that... we bid goodbye to 2021.

A new year is an opportunity for a fresh start and new beginnings. So as we begin 2022, here are some questions to ponder on (and journal about) to help you create a fulfilling year:

1. Who do I want to become this year? And what actions do I have to take to become that person?

(Do you want to become more confident, courageous, stronger, etc., to create your desired results and reach your goals?)

2. What brought me joy and other positive emotions in 2021? What brought me pain and suffering?

(Being aware of this clarifies what you want more in your life and what you want less of).

3. Looking back in 2021, what am I most proud of, and what are the “wins” that I’m celebrating?

(Focusing on the positive things that happened and your accomplishments, no matter how small, not only cultivate positive emotions but also helps you become confident, motivated, and optimistic in facing the new year).

4. What are my 2022 goals, and how do I align them to my values?

(Aligning your goals with what you value keeps you motivated and makes the goal more meaningful).

5. What life lessons have I learned from 2021 that I can apply in 2022? What will I leave behind in 2021?

(Learning from your mistakes, applying the lessons learned, and leaving behind what’s weighing you down — such as anger, resentment and bad habits — are essential to having a better, healthier, and more successful year).

May you continue to flourish in 2022! 🦋✨

May you always look on the side of life and be an eternal throughout this holiday season and the new year ahead. ☀️🦋✨

While a healthy dose of pessimism is helpful depending on the situation, in general, optimism (being hopeful and the tendency to look at the bright side of things) is good for our wellbeing and, according to research, may even help us live longer.

☀️ It’s also fascinating to note that optimism is influenced by our brain chemistry, particularly the dopamine levels in our brain. Thus, increasing dopamine levels can help us become more optimistic and happier.

☀️ Here are some natural ways to increase the dopamine levels in your brain:

- Get enough quality/restful sleep
- Eat foods rich in tyrosine and magnesium (such as green leafy vegetables, protein-rich foods and fruits like banana and apple)
- Manage stress levels through meditation, exercise, yoga, listening to music, cuddling with a pet (like Jake!), and dancing
- Limit sugar intake
- Pursue a new goal

So, are you an eternal optimist like me? ☺️

This holiday season, take time to repair, nurture and strengthen your relationships. ❤️

While there are a lot of factors at play when it comes to our longevity (such as genetics, diet, exercise, sleep, diseases, accidents, etc.), one factor strongly linked to living longer is the quality of our relationships and social connections.

Simply put, having happy relationships makes us healthier mentally, emotionally, and physically.

How’s the quality of your relationships? How can you continuously nurture and strengthen them?

Jake is ready and excited for Christmas!✨

I love the holiday season, but it can get overwhelming and stressful. So amidst the gift shopping, parties, and spending time with family and friends, don’t forget to take care of your wellbeing!

🦋 One way to take care of our wellbeing this silly season is practising healthy boundaries.

Having healthy boundaries with our finances and our emotional and physical health will help us enjoy and have fun, rather than feel stressed, depleted and resentful.

🦋 Here are some tips and examples of having healthy boundaries this holiday season:

✨ Come up with a budget for gifts and festivities and stick to it. The last thing you want is to end up in credit card debt or be stressed about your finances. Remember that you don’t have to impress your family and friends with fancy gifts if it’s not within your budget.
Give more value to the quality time you’ll be spending together, rather than material things.

✨During family gatherings, remind yourself that you don’t have to answer every question, or participate in conversations that you either feel uncomfortable answering, or make you feel depleted engaging in (especially for private topics such as when you’re getting married or having kids, your finances, future plans and relationship status, etc.).

✨ You don’t have to attend every gathering with family and friends if you don’t want to.

✨Say no if you can’t do something rather than forcing yourself or have too much on your plate (for example, cooking or preparing food, picking up someone, helping someone organise a get-together, etc.).

✨If you’re following a specific diet, whether for health or lifestyle reasons, either bring your own food to share with others or inform the host before the gathering.

🦋 What tips do you have for staying happy and healthy during the busy holidays? Please do share!
