𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘐’𝘮 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵? 😬

This is a common question, especially in yin, when the sensations we feel are more subtle because we focus on the deep tissues rather than the muscles.

Yin is a passive style, which means (unlike in active styles) we let gravity do most of the work.

We come into a posture, release gripping, and allow the body to open.

🌸 Imagine a flower. A flower doesn’t need to struggle to open. It happens naturally.

We allow sensation to come to us rather than seeking it out.

Holding our postures for between 3 and 5 minutes gives us the time to…
🔹Absorb the body’s response to each posture
🔹 Practice stillness and mindful movement
🔹 Cultivate body awareness

The more body awareness we cultivate, the more we’re able to discern if we’re “doing it” or not.

“𝙄’𝙢 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙜𝙖!” 😬

I’ve heard this a lot.

It’s a common misconception.

There is no such thing as being “flexible enough” for yoga.

Yoga is not gymnastics. It is not acrobatics. It is ultimately a mindfulness practice done in physical postures. It unites body and breath and cultivates present moment awareness.

Here’s what you’re developing in all postures (no matter how 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘤):
🔹Coordination and control
🔹Presence and centeredness
🔹Physical and mental flexibility
🔹Awareness of the body-mind: familiarity with where you are physically and mentally without judgement.

This is the core of yoga.

And none of these things requires you to be able to do a handstand or a split. 🤓

Advanced postures are great when you’re ready for them. But don’t let “not being flexible enough” stop you from discovering yoga.

𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘴 𝘣𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘨𝘢? 👩🏻‍🌾

According to Swami Kripalu, the answer is yes.

How? 🤔

Any activity done intentionally and mindfully can be a yogic practice, which, by definition, unites the body and mind.

Here are some benefits of doing daily tasks with intention:

🔹Keeps your awareness in the present moment
🔹Allows you to ease into flow state, giving the thinking mind a break
🔹Reframes any otherwise negative connotations you may have about the activity

So, next time you find yourself grumpy about doing household tasks, see if you can flip the script. Can you see them as mindfulness practices? 😌

𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦? 🤯

In the digital age, we are constantly being pulled in all directions. Consequently, we’re spread too thin and unable to concentrate on anything fully.

“This constant fragmentation of our time and concentration has become the new normal,” says Harriet Griffey in a Guardian article.

So, how can we stay focused?

😌 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘮𝘢, an umbrella term for yogic breathing techniques, has been used for thousands of years. There are lots of different patterns to explore.

Let’s keep it simple for now: how about deep breathing for two minutes?

Deep breathing …

🔹reduces brain fog
🔹 increases noradrenaline production (the “focus” chemical)
🔹Diffuses anxiety (by activating the parasympathetic nervous system)

So, the next time someone tells you to take a deep breath when you’re feeling scattered…don’t knock it! Try it. You may be pleasantly surprised. 😇

𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯’𝘵 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺?

We already have so many things to do between…
🔹 Taking care of home and family obligations
🔹 Keeping up a social life
🔹 Making a living

Adding yoga and meditation may seem like one more thing we don’t have time for.

But, did you know that mindfulness and embodiment practices actually 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦?

How? 🤯

Taking time to get cultivate awareness and embodiment means you spend less time…
🔹Scrolling on social media
🔹Procrastinating and losing focus
🔹Stuck in spirals of negative thoughts and self judgement

So, next time you ask yourself if you have time for that ten minutes of meditation…remember that the answer is yes. 😊❤️

They come and they go.

But, they are not who we are.

Practicing mindfulness reminds us that…
🔹 Thoughts and emotions are temporary and ever-changing
🔹We can acknowledge them without identifying with them
🔹Our true essence, our space of inner calm, is accessible to us at any time

Self development is not selfish.

When we work on expanding our consciousness and leveling up, it means we can show up as the best version of ourselves for our loved ones, our jobs, and our life in general.

On the mat, meditation and yoga encourage us…
🔹 To breathe through and sit with discomfort if it arises
🔹 To release gripping, “fighting it,” and trust in the process
🔹 Somatic regulation (recognizing cues from the body and adapting accordingly)

Off the mat, that means more…
🔹 Learning to find ease in uncomfortable situations (home, work, etc.)
🔹 Releasing what does not serve us instead of dwelling or stewing
🔹 Awareness of what we need in the present moment based on what the body is telling us.

What’s one quality you’ve developed through meditation and yoga?

Patience? Calm? Adaptability? Let me know in the comments! ✨

You have a body.

In our culture, we often forget.

There is so much emphasis on intellect (a lot of jobs nowadays involve some form of sitting at a computer for hours on end) that we sometimes see the body as “lower” and neglect caring for it.

But, did you taking care of your body can affect…
🔹 Your mood and emotions
🔹 Your ability to focus
🔹Your immunity and ability to fight disease

🤯

Diet, of course. That’s a given.

But we’re talking exercise and meditation, too! Exercise produces endorphins, the “happy” chemicals in the brain. Meditation calms the nervous system.

You wouldn’t trash your own home. So, treat your body with the same respect and reverence!

What’s your fave body-nurturing practice of the moment? 🌿

Too much going on? 😬

Why do we associate being busy with being important, valued, and even loved? 💖

⭐️ DOING
While day-to-day activities such as work and going out can be a source of fulfillment, we often let it be quantity over quality.

*You are not worth more if you do more.*

⭐️ BEING
Being is allowing ourselves the time for meditation and rest. Or just “doing nothing.”

You are, after all, a human being not a human doing. 😉

Rooted in the knowledge that your value is intrinsic helps us schedule from a space of heart, not ego.

YOGA 🧘🏻‍♀️
I’m also a professional actress (hence 😉) and originally discovered yoga as a warm-up before going onstage. I did my 200-hour training with the fabulous in 2019, and haven’t looked back since. 👩🏻‍🏫

Teaching yoga gives me such a sense of meaning. I’m grateful to be able to accompany students as they strengthen the body and mind and reconnect with their deepest selves. I truly believe that yoga is non-competitive, and my classes are for you regardless of your experience in yoga or fitness.

HUMOR 🤹🏻‍♀️
That all sounds very serious, but I do have a sense of humor and tend to make jokes or be silly sometimes during class. I think humor works wonders in diffusing tension and creating cohesion. 😉

It can be hard to start over in a new country where you don’t speak the language, whatever your circumstances. 🌎

I was so happy to be a part of creating a safe space on Saturday these lovely ladies and beautiful souls. ✨

Yoga is just one of the many practices that can unite us on a spiritual level and make us feel at home, no matter where we’re from or where we’ve been. 🙏🏻

If this difficult period in history has taught us anything, it’s that we’re all connected.

My actions effect you and vice versa.

But on an energetic level, this has been and always will be the case. Each of us is a drop of water on a vast ocean - separate and not so separate after all. Our being-ness effects the being-ness of those around us.

Imagine how different the world could be if we all kept the namasté principle in mind!

What is one thing you do to nourish your connection with others?
