Australia passed a law a couple of days ago:
No kid under 16 can have a social media account. Not Facebook. Not Instagram. Not Snapchat. Not TikTok. Not YouTube accounts. Nothing.
And the minute the law passed? They deleted MILLIONS of kids’ pages instantly across multiple platforms.
And honestly… I don’t think they’re wrong.
I have always listened to my gut feeling and limited my children’s screen time… whether that was TV, or video games.
I have always explained to them the dangerous and irreversible effects screens are having on a child’s brain. Not to mention the addictions….
My children will not have their own cellphone until they go to University… same goes for any Social Media accounts…
My children will always be closely monitored with regards to what they are watching, reading, playing, etc… and how much time they are spending in front of a screen.
They are sometimes upset, they are sometimes mad and throwing in my face that I am too strict, they are sometimes comparing themselves with others…
But my position has always been firmly clear. Everything I do is for their own, long term good, sacrificing their short term happiness. I assume this wholly!
NO!
I am not crazy…
I am not too strict!…
I am consciously choosing the hard way, vs the peace of mind and quietness in the house!
Dr. Gabor Maté has been for years now one of the harshest critics against screen time. While some experts believe there is a healthy amount of interaction a child can have with screens, most acknowledge the detrimental effects.
What do you think? Is Dr. Gabor Maté hitting the mark? Or is he overstating his concerns? Share your views in the comments.
