WHAT IS SOMATICS AND HOW DOES IT WORK? Thomas Hanna coined the term "Somatics" from the Greek word for "living body." He noted how lifestyle or injury could alter movement or posture, often causing Sensorimotor Amnesia potentially leading to pain. His method relieves pain by encouraging mindful movement and using pandiculation to retrain the nervous system. "Soma" refers not just to the physical body but to a conscious, aware organism. Through felt experiences, we can connect with this inner wisdom, building deeper awareness and healthier living. I weave somatics in with my yoga therapy training to create something especially for you.

The feet are our first point of contact to the earth, how we position our feet, how we mindfully choose to move with our feet affects our whole posture which can affect our wellbeing.

Our feet are pretty complex, did you know that they consist of 26 bones which makes up a quarter of the bones in the body! They keep us up, they take us places, they give us strength.

Try this ▶️ Grounding, root down by standing with your feet hip width apart pushing your heels down, spread your toes apart and start pushing the root of your big toe and little toe down, see if you can lift the arches of your feet.

The muscles in your thighs will activate pushing your feet further towards the earth, in turn activating the muscles all the way up the legs to the pelvic floor., Prehaps your posture changes slightly here as your pelvis alignes with your feet. Take some nice long breaths and you may feel a mental shift of feeling stronger, stable, and grounded, in the present moment.

In my early days of practice, a teacher told me about grounding, really tuning into the contact between the feet and the ground when walking or standing. I started doing it daily, on my way to work, in the shopping line etc, it just felt good, affirming. Tuning into that contact helped me navigate some big moves, decisions, and negotiations. At the time I had no idea why or how, it just worked, so the next time you may need a little extra moral support how about tuning into those feet 😉

Other small things you can do to give a bit of TLC to the feet is threading the fingers between the toes and giving them a squeeze, this creates space and flexibility through the toes.
Kneeling on the toes is also a good way to create space in the arches of the feet, helping us with our balance. You can start with weight more in the hands and gradually bring more weight over time.

The next time you look at your feet, criticising chipped varnish/ dead skin, knobbly bits etc, remember that they are most likely how you've got to where you are at this very moment, give them a little bit of time and your whole body will thank you for it 😬

Got to love a spiral! This picture was taken when I was 8 months pregnant with Eira, I climbed up a pretty tall lighthouse to see the view with people around me looking a little concerned. 😬

So spirals, I see them as a mental and physical symbol. Sometimes we spiral up and sometimes we spiral down, it's pretty healthy to move up and down these stairs but sometimes with physical pain it can be pretty tough to spiral on up. Mindset and our social settings can be a huge help.

I’m in the middle of another course, this time on the pelvis with a PT and physiotherapist. It’s actually my first ever self-paced online course, which I was hesitant about because I worried I wouldn’t learn as much as I would in a group setting. I’m happy to say I was wrong about that although it is taking me twice as long because I keep replaying videos as there’s so much valuable information to absorb.

I was excited to learn about a study on labral tears (Jacobs et al., 2017). The researchers assessed 64 patients scheduled for surgery, examining tear severity, pain levels, and pre-operative symptoms. Surprisingly, symptom severity correlated more strongly with mental health status than with the size of the labral tear or the degree of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI).

This highlights the importance of mindset, emotional wellbeing, and social support when working with pain.
Yoga Therapy supports both the physical issues and the person experiencing the pain. While it’s valuable to understand *where* something hurts and the why biomechanically, sometimes broadening the lens, becoming more aware of how we move, what we engage with, and how we relate to our experience means that we can find ways on and off the mat for meaningful and lasting change ❤️

I'm pretty sure if someone had told me to be positive and relaxed when in pain (thinking about labour) I would have punched them in the face, it takes a certain amount of practice to tune into your nervous system, understand how it responds and what it responds to to bring you into the present moment and not allow the pain to take over. You can think of your nervous system as having a mind of it's own, I often like to think of the nervous system, the body and consciousness as three separate beings. I'm pretty sure they only met occasionally when I was younger but they are in the midst of becoming great friends. I wonder if your body, nervous system and consciousness have met yet and if so, how well do they know each other?

Our bodies and mind move together as one shaping how we experience the world. Embodiment, the practice of noticing and listening to bodily sensations deepens self-understanding by revealing emotions, needs, and patterns. Through embodiment, we to truly feel and know ourselves from the inside out.

I offer personalised yoga therapy and somatic coaching for people experiencing stress, anxiety, chronic pain, fatigue, overwhelm and sleep difficulties.

Many symptoms can be closely connected to how the nervous system is responding. My work supports the body in shifting out of survival mode and into states of safety, rest, and repair through gentle, evidence informed movement, breathwork, and awareness practices.

As a certified yoga therapist and somatic coach, I tailor sessions to each individual, drawing from:

• Breath Practices
• RAIN and Focusing
• Somatic movement and Embodiment practices
• Pain-sensitive and adaptive yoga
• Nervous system education
• Relaxation techniques

Clients often experience:
✓ Better sleep
✓ Increased energy and focus
✓ Reduced anxiety and stress
✓ Improved pain management
✓ Greater emotional resilience and self-trust

I’ve been teaching yoga for over 10 years and working as a yoga therapist for nearly 5, offering calm, supportive, and practical care.

Come and rest, just as you are. A Yoga Nidra to ease you into sleep.

Let the hum of “must-dos” and “should-dos” gently dissolve as you settle into stillness.
There’s nothing to fix, nothing to chase, only this moment, and your breath.

Did you know?
Studies have shown that regularly practicing gratitude can lead to significant increases in happiness and overall well-being. Even a few minutes of focused appreciation each day can help shift the mind toward more positive, peaceful states.

Energy, what comes up for you when you hear this word?

If you asked someone else, would their answer be the same?

For some people they may think of caffeine, sports, electricity, waves. A biologist may think of mitochondria, a yoga practitioner may think of the breath.

Pranayama, (prana meaning breath as well as energy) are ancient breath practices that can help us shift our energy, just as our posture and our mindset can. All of these are deeply connected, depending on your personal story, it may be easier to access one pathway before another.

Energy is like the wind, we cannot stop it or create it, but we can choose where to direct it or convert it.

If you consistently work your biceps, directing your energy there, your arms will grow stronger. The same is true for the mind. What you read, learn, and return to again and again becomes part of who you are.

Perhaps this is how heartfelt intentions are truly realised, through direction. By guiding energy toward the life you wish to live and the world you wish to live in through making small decisions and gentle habits that are supportive, which may start for yourself but the positive results may ripple out into the world.
