📜 Hier, nous postions sur Facebook le panneau du 180th General Hospital de Carentan 180e. Aujourd'hui, Michel Gros tient fièrement ce même panneau, se tenant à l'endroit où il fut initialement attaché à la clôture du jardin de la maison à Dead Man’s Corner en 1944.
Michel, né en 1934, vivait dans cette même maison avec sa mère et ses grands-parents pendant la guerre. En juillet 1940, alors qu'il était encore un jeune garçon, il a vu deux motocyclistes allemands s'arrêter devant sa maison pour consulter leur carte avant de repartir en direction de Carentan. Quelques jours plus t**d, des centaines de soldats allemands ont défilé sur la RN13, passant devant Michel et son grand-père, M. Marie, qui les regardait en pleurant, hanté par les souvenirs de son service pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
En 1944, la clôture de la maison arborait cinq panneaux indiquant les divers hôpitaux de campagne installés à Carentan depuis la route d'Utah Beach. Michel, aujourd'hui âgé de 91 ans, se souvient qu'en juillet 1945, un seul panneau subsistait. Le 24 juillet de cette année-là, il a soigneusement retiré le panneau du 180th General Hospital situé à 6 kilomètres de Dead Man’s Corner, et l'a gardé en sécurité pendant près de 80 ans.

Yesterday, we shared a Facebook post featuring the sign for the Carentan 180th General Hospital. Today, Michel Gros proudly holds that very sign, standing at the spot where it was originally attached to the garden fence of the house at Dead Man’s Corner in 1944.
Michel, born in 1934, lived in this very house with his mother and grandparents during the war. In July 1940, as a young boy, he witnessed two German motorcyclists stop in front of his home to check their map before heading toward Carentan. Just days later, hundreds of German soldiers marched down the RN13 road, passing by Michel and his grandfather, Mr. Marie, who tearfully watched, haunted by memories of his service in the First World War.
By 1944, the house’s fence bore five signs marking the various field hospitals established in Carentan for troops coming from Utah Beach. Michel, now 91, recalls how, in July 1945, only one sign remained. On July 24th of that year, he carefully took down the sign for the 180th General Hospital, located 4 miles from Dead Man’s Corner, and kept it safe for nearly 80 years.
