💜The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘Bridging Generations’, encouraging all of us to actively engage with the past – listening, learning and carrying those lessons forward.

Our Chaplaincy team is marking Holocaust Memorial Day within the multi-faith rooms on each hospital site with a display, and are inviting patients, visitors and staff to tie a purple ribbon and come together, to remember persecutions of the past and stand against hatred and prejudice in the present.

Together we commemorate and educate for a better future.

This week marks Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.

Cervical cancer is largely preventable through HPV vaccination and regular screening.

Lead Practice Nurse, Rachel from Ashgrove Surgery in Pontypridd, shares a reminder of the importance of attending regular smear tests👇

💙❄Each year the winter puts a lot more pressure on CTMUHB services and the wider healthcare system.

However, there are lots of things that you can do, to stay safe, keep well, and help us to keep doing what we do best; looking after you and your loved ones.

In colder weather we are all more at risk of slipping and falling over. There is less daylight, fallen leaves become wet and slippery and cold weather can cause ice and snow.

In Wales between 230,000 and 460,000 people over the age of 60 fall, but over 50% of falls are preventable.

There are some key things you can do to help prevent slips, trips and falls this winter.

• Wearing flat shoes with rubber soles or shoes with heavy treads for traction
• Avoid distractions when out and about
• Use support such as handrails and walking aids
• Moving rugs and mats out of the way
• Ensuring pathways are effectively lit
• Having a light near your bed if you wake up in the night
• Remove any trip hazards like wires and clutter from your home

Keep well this winter! ❄💙

We are expecting to see another incredibly busy weekend, which will be a challenge as our sites remain under exceptional pressure.

We are continuing to urge the public to please familiarise yourself with the other ways you can access care within the community, and to only attend our Emergency Departments in an emergency.

Emergencies include:

• Chest pain
• Difficulty breathing
• Signs of a stroke
• Severe bleeding
• Serious injuries or sudden collapse

If you are unsure of your condition, the NHS 111 Wales website can help. You can also call 111 to access the Out of Hours service and you can press option 2 to access urgent mental health support.

Some pharmacies are open over the weekend and may also be able to support patients with minor illnesses.

If you do need to attend our Emergency Departments, there will likely be extended waits to be seen if your condition is not considered urgent.

Our teams are working hard to provide care to those who need us most.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Welcome to the world, Ioan.

Mam, Ffion, gave birth to Ioan unexpectedly at home and the care she received has strengthened her desire to become a midwife even more than before. 💙

“My partner and I would like to thank everyone involved in my care. Ioan being born at home was a huge shock, but a great experience! Similarly to my birth plan, I had a completely unmedicated and natural birth.

The paramedics arrived quickly, and were closely followed by on call midwives Nicola and Mikayla from Pontypridd and the Rhondda. You were absolutely amazing.

We did have to go into hospital the next day and the care we received from Harley and Meg was impeccable. Shout out also to Jeorgia and Melissa for all of your support throughout both of my pregnancies.

To you all, your compassion and commitment to advocating for the best care really shows.”

Please note - teddies in the picture are for photo purposes only and your baby should be placed to sleep on their back with a clear sleeping space. More information is available on The Lullaby Trust website: https://tinyurl.com/26op4wlf

📌Latest Maesteg Hospital update

There is a lot of information circulating about the future of Maesteg Hospital.

If you haven’t yet seen the video of local GP Dr Geoff Smith, sharing the facts, watch it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G6FQlrbFb0&feature=youtu.be

If you want to read those facts now, here is an at-a-glance summary of the most important points:

1. The health board has not taken any decisions to close Maesteg Hospital or sell the site. The hospital is not for sale and whatever the future holds for this important, much-loved building, will take into account the views of local people and the heritage of the site.

2. The health board wants to invest around £30 million pounds of new money into health and care services for Maesteg and the Llynfi Valley. It’s important that we use this once-in-a-lifetime investment in the right way to meet the future health and wellbeing needs of people living in the community.

3. We have listened and continue to listen to local people about what they need from NHS services in the future, including access to urgent care, more outpatients’ appointments provided locally, and more services for families and children.

4. Having already met with local people to hear their views we are committed to continuing to engage with communities to ensure they can be involved in what the future of healthcare in their area looks like.

5. Next week, we plan to meet with the elected representatives for Maesteg to ensure they have the opportunity to discuss with us the current and future plans for developing healthcare services in the area. This will include the Chair of the Maesteg Hospital League of Friends.

6. We are aware that a protest group has been set up and were disappointed that those responsible for coordinating this group had previously not responded to our offers of a meeting. Within the last 24-hours we have heard from the organisers and are now looking forward to having a full and factual discussion with them about health care service in Maesteg and the future of the hospital.

7. Local people who are anxious about the future deserve the facts and we will continue to meet with representatives and provide information through other means.

We love hearing feedback like this from our patients. 🌈

“I attended the Medical Day Unit in Royal Glamorgan Hospital today for a Liver biopsy and just wanted to praise how kind and caring the staff were to me and my mother.

To the staff down in Ultrasound that performed the biopsy - not sure I have the words really. I was so scared and trying my hardest not to show it (successfully so in my opinion).

They made me feel safe and cared for - they got me through it! So thank you! Even though that doesn’t cover it but it’s all I have at the moment.

Thank you to the lovely ladies in MDU and to Kaighley, Alice and the amazing Dr Ally Yates in Ultrasound 🩷”

Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under the age of 35.

Cervical screening can save lives by preventing cervical cancer from developing, or by picking it up at an early stage.

Women, and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64, are invited for an NHS cervical screening (smear) test every five years.

The sample is tested for high-risk types of a very common virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus can cause the cells on the cervix to change, and these changes can develop into cervical cancer if left untreated.

Treating cell changes early means that cervical cancer can be prevented.
Nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV.

It is still important to go for your cervical screening even if you have had your HPV vaccine.

💙❄Each year the winter puts a lot more pressure on CTMUHB services and the wider healthcare system.

However, there are lots of things that you can do, to stay safe, keep well, and help us to keep doing what we do best; looking after you and your loved ones.

Keeping warm over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depressio

Age UK and UKHSA suggest heating your home to a temperature that is comfortable for you. This should be at least 18°C in the rooms that you regularly use such as your living room and bedroom.

There are some simple changes that can help to keep you and your home warm:

• Try to reduce draughts – fit draught excluders around doors cheaply, or alternatively use an old towel to cover a gap under a door
• Keep your bedroom windows closed at night
• Wear several layers of thinner clothing – this will keep you warmer than one thicker layer.
• Ensure you are eating enough and having hot drinks

You can find out more here: https://ctmuhb.nhs.wales/patient-advice/support-with-the-cost-of-living/staying-warm/

Keep well this winter! ❄💙
