KIDD HAPLOGROUPS
The Y-DNA profile of the Kidd surname is overwhelmingly dominated by the R1b haplogroup. Of the 43 male participants tested, 41 belong to haplogroup R1b, while only 2 carry the I-M223 lineage. According to Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), Kidd surname participants fall into two distinct Y-DNA haplogroups—R and I—indicating at least two separate paternal routes into Europe and subsequently into North America.
Haplogroup I-M223 (also known as I2a1b1) is an ancient paternal lineage that diverged in Europe around 14,000 BCE. It is associated with post–Ice Age hunter-gatherer populations and later migrations into Northwest Europe, particularly Britain, Germany, and Scandinavia. The lineage likely originated near present-day Germany or Switzerland and spread gradually over thousands of years.
Today, I-M223 is most commonly found in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, offering valuable insight into deep ancestral movements.
Within the Kidd surname project, the I haplogroup is widely believed to reflect Scottish/Scott Irish paternal origins, while the R haplogroup is more commonly associated with English European ancestry.
