Can we prevent osteoarthritis?

It’s not just wishful thinking — prevention starts with action.

Whether we’re working with people or animals, physios and sports therapists are perfectly placed to spot early risk factors — joint loading, breed or genetic predisposition, muscle imbalances, weight, injury history — and put proactive plans in place.

From weight management and tailored exercise to manual therapy, PEMF, laser, and education, a multimodal, evidence-based approach can delay OA, reduce pain, and keep bodies moving for longer.

Prevention isn’t a dream — it’s a plan. And we’re part of it!

Ever wondered how ultrasound can help your horse’s tendon injury?

I use therapeutic ultrasound as part of rehab plans for soft tissue injuries, especially tendons.

🔸 What is it?
It’s sound waves that gently stimulate healing by causing microscopic vibrations in the tissues which helps encourage the body’s natural healing processes .

🔸 How does it help?
✔️ Stimulates blood flow to the injured area
✔️ Increases the delivery of nutrients required for healing
✔️ Reduces swelling and inflammation
✔️ Supports the alignment of collagen fibres as they repair

🔸 When do I use it?
Usually once the early inflammation has settled and the body is laying down new tissue — guided by assessment and veterinary input where needed.

Used alongside tailored exercise plans and hands-on techniques, ultrasound can really support recovery the right way.

One of my favourite things to treat is headaches — especially cervicogenic headaches.

These headaches often come from issues in the neck, such as stiff joints, muscle tension, or poor posture. They can cause pain around the base of the skull, behind the eyes, or even down into the shoulders.

Sports therapy can make a real difference by:
✅ Releasing tight muscles
✅ Improving joint mobility
✅ Strengthening the deep neck and shoulder muscles
✅ Helping you correct posture and movement patterns

If you’re struggling with headaches that don’t seem to ease, it could be your neck asking for help.

Sports therapy can help you move, feel, and live better, so if you're getting headaches and need want to know more, get in touch today!

Running through summer? Don’t let the heat throw you off track!

Here’s how to keep your training safe, enjoyable, and on track this season:

1️⃣ Run early or late
Midday heat can drain your energy and increase your risk of heat-related issues. Early morning or evening runs give you cooler temps, better performance, and a more enjoyable experience overall.

2️⃣ Hydrate before, during, and after
Your body loses fluids and salts through sweat, especially in hot weather. While water is essential, sometimes electrolytes or sports drinks are needed on longer or more intense runs to replace lost salts. Drinking too much plain water alone can actually throw your balance off — so plan hydration carefully for longer sessions.

3️⃣ Adjust your pace to the conditions
Running in heat or humidity is tough on the body. Slow down your pace if needed, especially on harder sessions. Remember: you’re still building fitness even if it feels slower.

4️⃣ Dress for success
Choose lightweight, breathable kit, wear a cap or visor for shade, and use a high-factor, sweat-resistant sunscreen. Feeling comfortable means you can focus on your run, not your kit!

5️⃣ Listen to your body
Aches, stiffness, or “niggles” are your body’s way of asking for attention. Ignoring them often leads to bigger problems later. Sports therapy can help keep you moving well and reduce injury risk.

Running should feel like progress, not punishment.

If you’d like help managing a recurring issue, recovering from injury, or improving your running performance — I’m here for you.

Think your young dog is just clumsy?
It could be an early sign of something more.

Young dogs are still growing — and how they move now shapes their lifelong health. Early vet physio support isn’t just for older dogs or injuries. It helps puppies and adolescents build strength, balance, and confidence in movement. 💪

Here’s how early intervention helps:
✔️ Supports healthy joint and muscle development
✔️ Prevents long-term issues from poor movement patterns
✔️ Builds strong foundations for sport or work
✔️ Helps you spot subtle issues before they become big problems

If something feels “off,” it’s always worth checking in. You don’t have to wait for an injury to take action.

Message me any time if you're unsure — early support makes a world of difference.

Why is early intervention so important?

Whether it’s a sports injury or mobility changes in yourself, your dog, or your horse, getting help early can make all the difference.

Early treatment means:
✔️ Faster recovery
✔️ Less risk of long-term problems
✔️ Better performance and quality of life

Don’t wait for things to get worse — act now and give yourself (or your loved ones) the best chance for long-term health.

Long days in the yard, on the tractor, or bent over feed bags can leave your back feeling tight and sore. These three morning exercises are quick, effective, and designed to reduce non-specific back pain by improving mobility and posture.

1. Chest Opener Stretch (Doorway Stretch)
Why: Opens up the chest and front shoulders, which often get tight from leaning forward.
👉 How: Stand in a doorway with your arms at shoulder height, elbows bent. Step one foot forward and gently lean into the stretch until you feel a pull across your chest.
⏱️ Hold for 20–30 seconds, repeat 2x.

2. Cat-Cow Stretch
Why: Promotes flexibility and relieves tension in the spine.
👉 How: On hands and knees, inhale and arch your back (cow), lifting your head and tailbone. Exhale and round your back (cat), tucking your chin and pelvis.
🔁 Repeat for 8–10 slow breaths.

3. Knee-to-Chest Stretch (Supine)
Why: Gently stretches the lower back and glutes. Great to do before getting out of bed or just after.
👉 How: Lie on your back, pull one knee into your chest while keeping the other leg extended.
⏱️ Hold for 20 seconds each side, repeat 2x.

Heard of acupuncture or dry needling but not sure what it actually involves? Here are some quick answers to the most common questions I get:

What is it?
It’s a technique called Western acupuncture or dry needling. Fine, sterile needles are inserted into muscles or trigger points to help relieve pain, reduce tension, and improve mobility. It’s guided by anatomy and neuroscience - no mysticism, just evidence-based care.

Is it the same as traditional acupuncture?
Not quite. Western acupuncture (or dry needling) is based on anatomy and neuroscience—it targets trigger points, muscle tightness, and nerve pathways to reduce pain and improve function.

Does it hurt?
Most people feel very little, maybe a tiny pinch. Some get a dull ache or twitch when a trigger point is released, which is totally normal!

What’s it commonly used for?
✅ Muscle tension
✅ Sprains and strains
✅ Headaches
✅ Chronic pain

How many sessions will I need?
That depends on the issue, but many people notice a change within 1-2 sessions.

Vet physio isn’t just for dogs and horses - it can make a real difference on the farm, too.
Whether it’s a lamb struggling to stand, a ram with a lingering limp, or a calf recovering from injury, physiotherapy supports healing, improves mobility, and helps animals get back on their feet - literally!

✅ Helps with joint and tendon issues
✅ Aids recovery after difficult births or injuries
✅ Improves comfort and movement in working or breeding animals

When every animal counts, early intervention can save time, money, and stress.

16/05/2025

Laser therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can help your pet heal faster, feel better, and move more comfortably.

What Is Laser Therapy (Photobiomodulation)?
Laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to help the body heal. It reduces inflammation, eases pain, and encourages tissue repair at a cellular level.

How Does It Work?
The light energy penetrates the skin and interacts with cells, stimulating their natural functions. It’s a bit like giving tired or damaged cells a boost of energy so they can work more efficiently—reducing swelling, improving circulation, and promoting faster recovery.

Why Use Laser Therapy?
✅ Effective for arthritis, wounds, sprains, spinal injuries, and post-operative recovery
✅ Completely pain-free and well-tolerated by most animals
✅ Many owners notice improvements after just a few sessions
✅ Can be used alongside other therapies or medications

Who Can Benefit?
Laser therapy is safe and beneficial for a wide range of animals—including dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and even farm animals. It’s especially useful for pets dealing with chronic pain, inflammation, or recovering from injury or surgery.

What About Laser Classes?
I use a Class 3B laser, which is clinically proven to be effective when used with the right settings and protocols. While Class 4 lasers are more powerful, research shows that precise dosing and treatment planning matter more than raw output. Class 3B lasers provide targeted, safe results without overheating tissue—ideal for gentle, focused care.

☀️ Summer’s Coming! 4 Ways to Keep Pets Cool & Safe

As the weather heats up, our pets feel it too—especially dogs and cats who can’t regulate heat like we do. Here are 5 easy ways to help them stay safe and comfortable this summer:

1. Cool Mats, Towels & Pools - Cooling mats, damp towels, or a shallow paddling pool offer much-needed relief. Pop towels in the fridge for extra chill!

2. Shady Chill-Out Spots - Create shaded areas indoors and out—think umbrellas, trees, or a cool tiled floor. Don’t forget to keep airflow going with a fan if needed.

3. Frozen Treats & Fresh Water - Add ice cubes or pet-safe frozen snacks to their bowls to boost hydration and provide enrichment on hot days. Always have fresh water available—top up at public taps when out.

4. Walk Early or Late - Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day. Early morning and evening are cooler and safer. Check pavements with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for paws!

🚨 Know the signs of heatstroke:
* Excessive panting or drooling
* Lethargy or confusion
* Bright red gums
* Vomiting or collapse
👉 If you spot these signs, seek immediate veterinary care.
