Another session for the princess that is Holly, the 11 year old Cockapoo, who looks fabulous for her age! Holly was treated with massage, light therapy and Tens. I used the light therapy to target muscle spasms across Hollys back and her surgery scar from a few months ago. The tens machine targeted Hollys hips.

I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Dream this weekend. In the video you can see Dream releasing tension from massage via lowering her head, licking and chewing. This is very rewarding to see as a vet physio😌 Tension release indicates a horse transitioning from the flight or fight state to the rest or digest state 🐴
Dream was treated with manual therapy including myofascial release and heat therapy

✨ TENS & NMES in Veterinary Physiotherapy – How They Help ✨

This is my own dog Jim, enjoying a TENS session as part of his physiotherapy care πŸ–€πŸ€

Jim recently presented with muscle spasms across his back musculature, which were causing discomfort and tension. Using TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) helped to:

βœ”οΈ Reduce painful muscle spasms
βœ”οΈ Decrease discomfort by interrupting pain signals
βœ”οΈ Stimulate the release of endorphins – the body’s natural pain relief
βœ”οΈ Promote deep relaxation due to the release of the endorphins(as you can see, Jim was very settled during treatment!)

TENS is particularly useful for:
β€’ Muscle spasms
β€’ Acute or chronic pain
β€’ Post-injury or post-operative discomfort
β€’ Targeted relief (placing the electrodes on a specific area)
β€’ Improving function

Alongside TENS, NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) can also be used to:
βœ”οΈ Activate specific muscles
βœ”οΈ Prevent muscle wastage
βœ”οΈ Improve strength and function
βœ”οΈ Support rehabilitation following injury or surgery

Both modalities are non-invasive, safe, and tailored to each individual animal’s needs. Many pets find the treatment soothing and comfortable, just like Jim did.

If you think your dog or horse could benefit from TENS or NMES as part of their physiotherapy plan, feel free to get in touch or ask your vet for a referral πŸ’™
