I see a lot of people recommending chiropractors and pemf and excluding massage therapists. I want to give you a few reasons why I believe a massage therapist should be used regularly at times in a horse’s life:

We all have different skills to contribute to your horse’s care. Bodies need different kinds of help at different times.

Remember that it’s the muscles that create tensile strength and hold the bones and organs in place. They are also what pulls the body out of optimum, by strength or weakness, which combine to create imbalance and potential unsoundness. This is especially true and important when a horse is coming into increased work, coming back into fitness, or when a horse is older and needs a little help staying loose and comfortable. You can be a great trainer, your horse will still build strength unevenly, it’s simply what happens when out of shape horses are put into exercise. It’s natural, normal and expected.

By being proactive and working with a great massage therapist you can help your horse be more balanced and comfortable and so sounder, more mentally balanced and train more easily. We can help the horse through the process by manually suppling, helping him learn his body, improving awareness and letting him use himself the best he can while he works to build and become, hopefully, the best version of himself.

🌟 Top Tip Tuesday 🌟⁣

💥Tight muscles are often weak muscles - strengthen them💥⁣

🙋‍♀️ Tight hip flexors? ⁣
🙋‍♀️ Tight calves? ⁣
🙋‍♀️ Tight shoulders? ⁣
🙋‍♀️ Tight hamstrings? ⁣

🤷‍♀️ All common complaints from riders but clinically usually these muscles aren’t physically shortened, our brain has just told them not to move further into movement to protect them because they are WEAK.⁣

🤸‍♂️ Tightness is a sensation, not a physiological change.⁣

🏇 Hip flexor muscle (pictured) tightness is the biggest complaint I hear from riders.⁣

❌ If you’ve been stretching your hip flexors, foam rollering and stretching some more, and it’s having no real effect, I would advise you to stop and reassess.⁣

❌ Too many online exercise programmes for riders focus on “core” (abdominal) strengthening and hip flexor stretching.⁣

🤷‍♀️ But often muscles that feel “tight” are WEAK. No amount of stretching or foam rollering will change that.⁣

🤓 Weak muscles fatigue quickly and then give a feeling of discomfort or tightness. Strength training, with an emphasis on eccentric control (strengthening into a lengthened position), can really help this.⁣

➡️ Improving hip flexor control and endurance by eccentric training not only improves the feeling of “tightness”, it also improves the control and precision of our seat aids and our position in the saddle.⁣

✅ As a Chartered Physiotherapist with over 20 years experience of assessing and treating riders, I have developed this exercise programme against the resistance of the bungi as this is THE best way I have found to improve hip flexor strength, flexibility and control.⁣

✅ ⁣This clinical reasoning applies to all muscle groups. Tight calves? Strengthen them through full range. Tight shoulders? Strengthen them through full range.⁣

🤸‍♂️ Focus on strengthening into a lengthened position - improving eccentric control - and help alleviate those feelings of muscle tightness.⁣

💙 Breathe better, move better, ride better⁣

Often in view, sometimes acknowledged but rarely (or incorrectly) addressed! Spoiler alert 🚨 changing the neck doesn’t come from training the neck, it comes from core hypaxial engagement, to lift the back and cause positive relaxed cervical engagement. The neck of the horse is often pinpointed as an important factor in modern dressage, alongside limb action.

The conformation and muscle development of your horses neck can truly be a sign as to their mechanics of action during exercise. An overdeveloped underside of the neck (brachiocephalic muscle) is often a tell tale sign of incorrect riding and posture.

A simple exercise to do is to take a photo of your horses neck from the side, and trace over its outline. Can you see dips, bulges? Take your hand and stroke your horses neck gently with your eyes closed. Can you feel relaxation and suppleness? Is the muscle moving under your pressure, or remaining stagnant? Is your horse happy with this pressure, or do they move away from you?

I’d love to see your responses and hear how you get on! 🤍

This is so true!

I was at my fittest and most healthy when CrossFit training. CrossFit like all forms of exercise, when undertaken correctly does not make you more likely to experience injuries. In fact over the time I regularly trained at a CrossFit gym, I was a better athlete, more efficient horse rider and did not have any of the niggling back or knee issues I had before and it’s so much fun 🤩
