In 2015 a study published in the journal Sleep took over 10,000 children across 14 countries, including the UK, and looked at their sleep and bedtime routines.

It found that a consistent bedtime routine was associated with longer sleep, less time needed to fall asleep, and reduced night wakings. In fact, the more consistent the routine, the better the sleep quality!

Other studies have shown that better sleep is strongly associated with improved mood, better memory, more attention for learning, lower anxiety and better immune health.

So that bedtime routine you're implementing with you toddler or older child isn’t just a way of getting everyone to bedtime. It really does serve a critical function in supporting both their sleep and overall development.

If you're struggling with sleep in your house, before you do anything else, start with 2 things:

1. Introduce a consistent morning wake-up time. Exactly the same time. Every. Single. Day. (Trust me, it's worth it)

2. Introduce a (truly) consistent bedtime routine. Agree your routine, set the boundaries and stick to them every night. It matters less what's in your bedtime routine than the fact that you stick to it (no negotiation) every night.

These two things may be enough in themselves to improve sleep. If not, then we can make other adjustments depending on what you're struggling with. Just drop me a message.

Toddlers - all the fun, all the noise and no idea what a lie-in is. 😂

Parents can sometimes get caught out when their toddler's sleep needs change, so if yours is waking earlier and earlier it might be time to cap the nap or nudge bedtime a bit later.

Who else has got a toddler causing joyful chaos in your house right now?

Two options for you, depending on your family's preferences and those of your toddler. Either one is totally fine.

Ready to drop that 2nd nap? You got this!

This can happen at a wide range of ages depending on your baby's sleep needs, their sleep pressure sensitivity and how happy they are to fill their sleep requirements overnight. But if you have a baby/toddler in that 12-18month window then this is probably relevant for you.

If you're at that point of wanting to move away from feeding to sleep, but not sure how to get started without actually reducing your feeds, then I have the course for you.

This isn't about not feeding your baby, or feeding your baby less. Its about showing them how to fall asleep after feeding rather than whilst feeding, which over time can allow you to feed at other times during their wake, rather than as a way for them to fall asleep.

Most of the mums who choose to work with me are quite happy to keep one or two night feeds if their baby is under a year old. They just don't want to be doing them every 90 minutes throughout the night!

Great sleep can still include a night feed or two, if that means being up for 15 mins for an effective feed and your baby then happily falling straight back to sleep for 3 or 4 hours after their feed.

If that sounds like the kind of sleep that you're after, then we might be a great match.

Make sure you plan for WHERE you will co-sleep with your baby if you need to or want to.
