Both analytic and gestalt language processing = language development. There are 2 different paths to get to original, flexible language.
We canβt change how a child processes language BUT we can change how we support them to help them on their language development journey.
Most SLPs know exactly what to do with analytic language processors. So let's talk about the other group...
Our gestalt language processors will follow these stages
1) echolalia (gestalt or script)
2) mix and match or mitigated gestalts.
3) single words or new 2 word combinations
4) self generated, beginning grammar (Stages 5-6 are advanced grammar).
If they are not moving through the stages on their own they may need support. For GLPs this may look like communication mostly in stage 1 or 2 or maybe a mix of a few stages. Limited scripts (gestalts) and difficulty communicating all the things they want to say (thoughts, ideas, dreams, shared experiences). These are the kids that need our help. We can support them using the natural language acquisition framework (Blanc, 2012).
Anyone else hearing scripts from Cocomelon lately?!
