πŸ’œπŸ’› IDEA 1: Easy ways to support 2024! Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) awareness day is this Friday 18th October and one of the easiest ways to make people DLD aware is by sharing our DLD fact sheet with family, friends, school, community and work. πŸ€³πŸ“Ί There's lots of conflicting guidance online about the links between screen-time and children learning to talk and understand words.

Our new myth-busting page for parents and carers offers advice on the ways that children can use screens while prioritising the skills they need to face the future with confidence: https://speechandlanguage.org.uk/news/myth-busting-screen-time/

Some people think that Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is to do with accent, dialect or learning multiple languages. That is not the case. DLD is about words and sentences and how they are used and understood. and that all happens in the brain.

DLD is about how the brain processes spoken language (words and sentences). People are born with DLD. That doesn't mean they cannot progress, but that difference continues throughout their life. Support helps. Strategies help. Awareness of DLD helps too.

That's why we are raising awareness of DLD on Friday October 20th.

Please share this post so more people learn about DLD.

Both analytic and gestalt language processing = language development. There are 2 different paths to get to original, flexible language.

We can’t change how a child processes language BUT we can change how we support them to help them on their language development journey.

Most SLPs know exactly what to do with analytic language processors. So let's talk about the other group...

Our gestalt language processors will follow these stages
1) echolalia (gestalt or script)
2) mix and match or mitigated gestalts.
3) single words or new 2 word combinations
4) self generated, beginning grammar (Stages 5-6 are advanced grammar).

If they are not moving through the stages on their own they may need support. For GLPs this may look like communication mostly in stage 1 or 2 or maybe a mix of a few stages. Limited scripts (gestalts) and difficulty communicating all the things they want to say (thoughts, ideas, dreams, shared experiences). These are the kids that need our help. We can support them using the natural language acquisition framework (Blanc, 2012).

Anyone else hearing scripts from Cocomelon lately?!
