Mindful Minutes: 20 is the Magic Number ✨

Did you know that a 2019 study from the University of Michigan found that just 20 minutes in nature can significantly reduce your stress hormone levels?

No fancy tools, no special skills—just step outside.

Try this today:

1. Leave your phone behind (or turn it off) 📴
2. Sit or walk in a natural setting 🌳
3. Breathe slowly. Notice your surroundings 🧘
4. Let thoughts come and go like clouds 🌥️
5. Return feeling a little lighter 🪶

This small daily ritual is backed by science and rooted in centuries of nature-based wisdom. 🌿

Happy Earth Day! 🌱

To help you celebrate Earth day, here are 5 easy ways you can get outside and appreciate your surroundings today! 🌻

1. Walking Barefoot 👣
Walking barefoot, also called earthing or grounding, may reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and help balance cortisol levels by allowing the body to absorb the Earth’s surface electrons (Chevalier et al., 2012).

2. Get to know a tree 🌴
Trees emit phytoncides—natural chemicals shown to reduce anxiety and support immune function. Combined with deep breathing, time under trees can greatly enhance relaxation and overall well-being (Li, 2010).

3. Journaling Outside 📚
Writing in nature can support emotional processing, mindfulness, and mental clarity. Natural settings are proven to reduce attention fatigue and promote reflection (Kaplan and Kaplan, 1989).

4. Pick up some litter 🚯
Even small acts of care for the Earth can enhance a sense of purpose, connection, and psychological well-being (Nisbet and Zelenski, 2011).

5. Thank the Earth 🌎
Practicing gratitude activates areas of the brain linked to empathy, happiness, and self-awareness. When directed toward nature, gratitude also deepens our ecological identity and connection to place (Emmons and McCullough, 2003).

Teamwork meets tranquility. 🛶

Canoeing as a group encourages bonding whilst letting you connect with the soothing rhythm of nature. Plus, the physical activity releases endorphins, boosting your mood! (Fox, 1999). 😁

Savour every bite! 🍳

Mindful cooking outdoors isn’t just about the food - it’s about connecting with yourself and the environment. Research shows that practicing mindfulness can enhance your appreciation of food and reduce symptoms of anxiety (Kristeller & Wolever, 2010). 🌿

Cook your way to mindfulness!🧑‍🍳🌳

Preparing a meal outdoors engages your senses in the present moment - listening to the crackle of the fire, feeling the texture of fresh ingredients, and enjoying the aroma of nature. Studies suggest that mindful practices, even through cooking, can reduce stress and increase emotional regulation (Brown & Ryan, 2003).

Nature offers peace, purpose and connection. Research by Kaplan and Kaplan (1989) emphasizes the concept of ‘restorative environments’, where natural settings helps us recover from mental fatigue and stress. 🌿
