🐴🦷 Blind Wolf Tooth Removal 🐴🦷
Blind wolf teeth sit hidden beneath the gum line (as seen on the x-ray directly above the removed tooth), and aren’t always visible on a routine oral examination. While you can’t see them, they can still cause discomfort, especially in ridden horses, as pressure from the bit can lead to pain and changes in behaviour.
Removing these teeth can significantly improve comfort, particularly for young horses starting their ridden work, or horses showing unexplained signs of bit pain/behavioural changes.
In this case, the horse's owner called the practice because she was concerned that her horse was experiencing pain when ridden. On oral examination, Rachel found a hard lump under the gum line, where the bit sits.
Using X-rays, we were accurately able to identify the exact position of the blind wolf tooth before removal, helping us plan the extraction.
The tooth was removed under standing sedation, and the patient went home the same day. The horse will have a short period of rest to allow the area to heal, before being reintroduced to ridden work.
Although it is still early days, we are highly optimistic that this will resolve all of the issues, as it was undoubtedly causing the horse discomfort.
If you have concerns about your horse’s mouth, bitting comfort, or changes in behaviour, our team is always happy to help.
