Going beneath the surface of Men’s mental health!
Erikson theorised that people go through 8 stages of developement in life, overcoming certain crises to gain virtues. During Adolescence, discovering one's gender identity is highly crucial to development, and usually occurs during stage 5 of Erikson's Identity vs. Role Confusion stage.
However, a few years ago, whilst researching for a psychology dissertation, I delved into my thoughts and formulated a reasonable explanation (to myself at least) as to why men were feeling so challenged in the modern age!
I felt that Eriksons 5th stage
‘Identity vs. Role Confusion’
could be applied to Men and Women in our society and the modern age.
Men are losing their identity in society due to a decrease in the masculine role within domestic life and the wider society.
Historically, men had the role of ‘getting out there and bringing home the bacon’ … nowadays however, men are not the sole breadwinners.
Men and Women’s roles have changed dramatically and in some cases gender roles have become nonexistent regarding jobs, relationships and responsibilities.
So what does that mean for Men?
Well, I’m concerned that Male su***de has increased dramatically, it also concerns me that men are being stripped of their identities and finding themselves in the zone of ‘Identity vs. Role Confusion’
which leads some men to develop mental health problems due to feeling unappreciated, stressed, depressed, unable to talk about their problems and withdrawing into themselves.
