I felt this was spot on for many of my clients and myself in the past. Rumination is replaying events or conversations; taking up energy, allowing your inner critic to control the narrative and remove you from being in the here and now. Reflection is a positive way to gain a new perspective and allows space for growth.
After 20 years of practicing medicine, I have learned that rumination is not the same as reflection.
A 2008 paper in Perspectives on Psychological Science synthesized decades of research on rumination. Replaying past events without resolution was strongly associated with depression, anxiety, and even worse physical health markers. The mind, given an old wound to revisit, often deepens it instead of healing it.
Memory replay is not analysis. It is residency.
You are allowed to remember without revisiting.
Your present life deserves your presence.
What memory have you been replaying? Set a five minute timer. Think it through. Then close the door, kindly, and go live today.
