When looking at the ingredients, remember they are listed in order of how much of each thing is in the food. The first ingredient is what the food has the most of.
Try not to eat too many foods where the first ingredients are sugar, fat, salt, oils, or other types of sugar. These might taste good but aren’t as healthy for your body.
Understanding Red, Amber, and Green Food Labels
Some foods and drinks have red, amber, and green colors on the label to help us know if they are healthy. Here’s what the colors mean:
Green means the food is healthy and low in fat, sugar, or salt. You can eat lots of these!
Amber means the food is okay—it’s not too high or too low in fat, sugar, or salt. You can eat these most of the time.
Red means the food is high in fat, sugar, or salt. These are treats, so eat them only sometimes and in small amounts.
If most of the label is green, it’s a great choice. If it’s mostly amber, it’s still a good option. But if you see red, remember to enjoy that food less often to stay healthy.
