People who are Neurodivergence have increased risk of chronic pain and joint hypermobility.

People who are neurodivergent can:

➡️ Have increased sensitivity such as to bright lights, and strong smells. This hypersensitivity alters brain response to touch. It can alter how the brain processes pain - the response is heightened in this population. A bit like a dial that is turned up to its highest level.

➡️ Have a hypersensitive central nervous system.

➡️ Have widespread chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and joint hypermobility. Also other conditions such as IBS can be seen in this group of population due to the ‘wind up’ response of the central nervous system.

➡️ Can develop a condition known as POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). This is when the person stands up and there is an abnormal change in blood pressure and can faint as a result.

➡️ have an impact on the autonomic functions such as breathing, blood pressure.

These issues can show how closely the physical and neurological systems work together and how there is an impact on these body functions that can occur in the neurodivergent population.

Please note that these issues do not affect everyone who is neurodivergent! There is still a lot of research to do.

Rheumatoid Arthritis facts!

➡️ Smoking, being overweight can predispose you to Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

➡️ It can run in families.

➡️ There is no cure for it but medication can help in some people.

➡️ RA is an inflammatory condition whereby the body starts to attack healthy cells.

➡️ Treatment plan can help to maintain joint mobility and strength within your limitations.

➡️ Because RA is an inflammatory condition it can make you more predisposed to additional health conditions such as high blood pressure.

➡️ RA can affect any joint(s) but is commonly fouund in the hands and fingers.

How a drop in oestrogen can impact on collagen health!

➡️ Low estrogen can result in poor tendon healing and a reduction in the integrity of the tendon.

➡️ In order to manage potential reduced tendon integrity, exercise is important including loading exercises such as walking.

➡️ If you are starting a new exercise routine it should be a gradual process and building up the load needs to be done in a safe way thus reducing the risk of injury.

➡️ Injuries to collagen can take longer to heal due to fewer cells being produced for repair.

Infographic showing what happens with injury.

➡️ The tissue tolerance to load eg walking is reduced particularly in patients with chronic pain.

➡️ Chronic pain creates a hypersensitive nervous system which impacts on tissue tolerance.

➡️ Chronic pain causes part of the brain (amagdyla) to be on ‘alert’ and thereby protecting the limb/region causing normal movement and touch to the skin to be painful.

Facts!

➡️ Your spine is robust and meant to bend so don’t avoid using it. You have to ‘bend to mend’!

➡️ Everyone is asymmetrical. If people tell you that you’re out of alignment, this is fear inducing language and simply not the case.

➡️ Steroid injections can work but remember they are not a quick fix to a problem.

➡️ Remember MOTION IS LOTION!

➡️ Manipulation is a good tool to use in appropriate circumstances. If people tell you that manipulation can realign and readjust they are telling you incorrect information. Manipulation does NOT realign anything!

➡️ Pelvic tilts, spinal curves and leg length discrepancies are normal. We all have variations within our body.

Prolonged achilles pain/injury!

➡️ Chronic Achilles tendinopathy on both sides can be a sign of systemic disease.

➡️ Achilles tendinopthy on both sides can be a sign of: diabetes, being overweight, rheumatology conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

➡️ Treatment would be blood tests to rule out other conditions and then focusing on building up tendon tolerance to load.

➡️ Achilles injury can be due to a sudden increase in exercise/activity level.

➡️ Treatment approach for Achilles injury/tendinopathy is about a gradual increase in load and should also consist of an holistic approach to prevent re-occurrence.
