Happy Monday all 😊. Today I wanted to highlight those of you who suffer with thick toe nails (maybe fungal?), that have got a little out of control, rubbing on your shoes, socks or against other toes, making them sore and digging in. Perhaps they are not looking their best. Maybe they've got hard to manage?

You don't have to suffer with the pain or embarrassment. Please give me a call, it's really something that can be improved, treated quickly and make you far more comfortable and confident. It does make me sad that people put up with this for months and even years - it really doesn't need to be that way.

Wart and Verruca Treatment Update!

I am now able to offer Verrtop (the best on the market) as well as silver nitrate verruca and wart treatment. The oclusion method with zinc oxide tape and salicylic acid methods continue as a non invasive conservative method, but all require consistency in there application and attending regular appointments.

In summary, there are many methods to eradicate these, some work faster than others, although it depends on the individual and their own immune system, the size of the lesion, how long you've had these, consideration of underlying health issues and how many you have.

Let's talk about Gout! Over the past two weeks this medical condition has come up repeatedly. Three clients convinced it was a foot/nail issue which, when referred to their GP was indeed gout. So let's break it down and clarify this condition.

What is Gout - This is a from of arthritis caused by uric acid crystals that form in and around the joints. According to the NHS Gout can be experienced as a 'severe pain in a joint – usually your big toe, but it can be in other joints in your feet, ankles, hands, wrists, elbows or knees, presenting as hot, swollen, red skin over the affected joint – redness may be harder to see on black or brown skin'. It's super painful and can be treated in various ways. I have detailed some useful links, NHS and Arthritis UK which provide some great information. Sometimes underlaying medical conditions show up in your feet, but it's not actually a foot issue!

Welcome 2026 - just back from an early new year holiday and ready to start the year with a zing! Also celebrating my first year trading as West Malling Footcare and what a fabulous year it has been. Let's talk about verrucas (plantar warts). They are caused by the HPV virus and there are over 200 different dermatological types. Sometimes as a patient or professional it's not easy to see them until they are debrided back, as they usually have an overlaying callus hiding the lesion. Did you know that the easiest way is to know which one it might be is to pinch or press the overlaying skin. With verrucas pinching hurts, but corns pressing will hurt. This is not definitive method but is usually a good guide.

So.. Verrucas are highly contagious (eekk, horrible I know but they are pretty common) and spread easily on your body but also to other people.

There are lots of methods to resolve these, some are conservative and others more intrusive and uncomfortable. As a rule, I always start with the lesser non-invasive options first and expand if needed to other treatments.

A large number of clients ask, how long and what is the cost of eradicating these? . Well, there is a number of factors which contribute to a successful outcome. These being, how well you follow at home instructions outside of appointments, how well your immune system responds and attending regular review/ treatment sessions with me.
