Developing Positives Counselling

Developing Positives Counselling I am a pluralistic counsellor, which means I work in collaboration with you to provide therapy in a way that meets your needs.

I can draw on a number of modalities, but at my core I am person centred.

It's not just the weather that can impact on our mental health, but the constant rain does not help! I am aware that we have a shortage of free counselling in Aberdeenshire, so I am continuing to offer a 50% discount for all new clients who are looking for help. I am registered with the BACP and offer a free initial appointment for everyone so that you can make sure I am the right fit for what you are looking for.

Winter can be tough. As I embark on setting up my new counselling and therapy service, Developing Positives, I recognise that increased costs and lack of services are hitting people hard. That is why I have decided to reduce my fees by 50% for all new clients for all appointments between November 2025 and the end of February 2026.

Here in Aberdeenshire we are surrounded by opportunities to engage with nature - forests, rivers, beaches, hills, mountains - and in my counselling I have found that some clients find strength when spending time outdoors. I have used photography exercises, mindful approaches, and walk and talk sessions with clients who have expressed a desire to explore techniques which can be beneficial to well being.

Following the sudden end of MHA and the devastating impact this had on clients (not to mention their staff) I am pleased to say that a local Banchory business person has offered me space at no charge so that I can continue to see the clients I was working with - I am very grateful, and will not be charging these clients for my service.

I will continue to look at options going forward to see how I can offer no (or low) cost appointments in the future.

Great idea! I will also be looking at ways to make counselling more accessible for those who find that fees are a barrier to sessions.

These are techniques I have used in my work with therapeutic photography, and it is great to see other counsellors and therapists recognising the value of photography. As a pluralistic therapist, it is something that I have on my "therapeutic menu" and can use if my clients feel it might be useful for them.

I have been so thoroughly impressed with the use of photovoice in my work with clients, I could not imagine counselling without it.

As I launch Developing Positives, it is very sad to learn that such a fantastic organisation who provided counselling for so many people has just closed.

Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA) has been in operation since the 1950’s and it is where I completed my placement whilst studying for my Pluralistic Counselling qualification, and where I was a volunteer counsellor. It provided free counselling for people in need all across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.

This week they announced that, because of their financial situation, they have had to close with immediate effect, leaving staff without a job, and leaving those who were receiving a service, without vital support.

For more on this story, please see

Mental Health Aberdeen is shutting after "working tirelessly to explore all available options".
