Really enjoying day 1 of a 3 day course with the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering. Continuous learning is such an important part of being a speech and language therapist. I want to bring the very best support to the children, young people and families I work with. Looking forward to bringing some fresh knowledge and strategies back to my practice!

Time well spent today with a lovely new family talking about all things stammering.

Around 1 in 12 children between the ages of 2 and 5 will experience stammering. If you have concerns that your child might be stammering, reach out to your local SLT department or to an independent therapist like myself. There's a lot we can do to support you and your little one.

All ready for another sunny day in speech therapy 🌞. A good mix of admin, seeing clients and school visits today.

Sometimes when working on speech sounds, children need to repeat the words MANY times. This could be....well... not that fun! This week, one little client was SO taken by the abacus, sliding a bead across for every practice word, he managed to do a massive 100 reps! He was motivated to get every single bead over. He added even more repetitions whilst chopping up a playdoh snake. It's the simplest things sometimes that make it just a little bit fun.

Good fun this week doing minimal pairs therapy with a little one who leaves off sounds at the ends of words. This can make it really tricky for others to always understand all the funny and interesting things he has to say. We spent time listening to make sure he could hear the difference between these pairs of words and then he had a go at saying them too. Sometimes he forgot his 'tail' sound but using this kind of pairs therapy is helping him discover that when he remembers his 'tail' sounds, we know what he is saying. Extra fun racing all the jumping frogs and building a tower that was way taller than him.

Back to work today after the half term break. A busy week ahead with new and regular clients, a course to keep developing my knowledge and skills to support children with speech sound difficulties, plenty of admin and probably quite a lot of coffee.

When your client has a special interest in space then that's what we do! Using a child's interests and following their lead in play are excellent ways to engage and support language skills. I think we'll have lots of fun with these!
