My latest YouTube video shows the two methods I used to make safe drinking water on a high altitude mountaineering expedition in Bolivia.

Knowing how to choose a water source and how to make the water clean before you drink it in remote settings is critical to maintaining health and improving expedition success!

Check it out here:

Getting safe drinking water is one of the most important challenges on any expedition. When you’re climbing in remote, high altitude mountains, there’s no ta...

⛰️🩺I'm delighted to share that all three of the online courses on The Mountain Doctor platform have now been officially accredited for CPD points by three leading UK organisations in the mountain and outdoor professional community:

• Mountain Training (MT)
• Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI)
• British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML)

This accreditation recognises the value of high-quality medical and safety education for those working and operating in mountain environments.

My goal has always been to make practical, evidence-based mountain medicine education accessible to those who need it most — the people working, leading, travelling and playing in remote environments.6*6

To celebrate the accreditation, I’m offering 15% off all courses with the code CPD15 until 31/03/2026.🎉

A big thank you to the organisations involved for recognising the platform and supporting CPD in the mountain community.

If you're a mountain professional looking to build your medical knowledge for remote and alpine environments, the courses are available now on The Mountain Doctor platform

❄️ From Numb To Necrosis: A Frostbite Case & Information Guide ❄️

After recently managing a case of frostbite in my emergency department, I’ve written up the case, alongside some general information about frostbite with the aim of raising awareness of this cold injury.

Frostbite is preventable, but when it does occur, knowing how to recognise it and what rapid action to take can prevent a deteriorating injury from leading to unnecessary amputation.

✍️Read more about this in the article I’ve written: https://drhannahlock.co.uk/2026/03/03/from-numb-to-necrosis-a-frostbite-case-information-guide/

In my latest YouTube video, I break down **everything I carried in my medical kit** during my high-altitude mountaineering trip in Bolivia with my husband. I also explain what I considered to make my choice of what to pack.

Climbing in the Bolivian Andes means dealing with serious altitude, unpredictable weather, and remote terrain. This wasn’t a massive expedition med bag — it was a carefully thought-out, weight-conscious kit designed for alpine-style climbing where every gram matters.

* 🏔️ High-altitude essentials
* 🩹 Basic trauma supplies
* 💊 Medications to manage various conditions
* 🧴 Foot care and wound dressing supplies

If you're planning a high-altitude climb in Bolivia or anywhere in the Andes, this breakdown will help you build a kit that’s practical, efficient, and actually useful in the field.

▶️The Mountain Doctor is now on YouTube!

The channel focuses on theoretical and practical mountain medicine, wilderness first aid, and medical decision-making in remote environments.

The first video is now available to watch!

Hypothermia can develop quickly in the mountains.

In this video, I show how to properly wrap a casualty to protect them from hypothermia, whether they are already cold, injured or immobile. This is a simple but critical skill for any wilderness setting.

This approach works for both conscious and unconscious casualties while awaiting rescue or evacuating your casualty.

⛰️ If you spend time in the mountains, subscribe and share — this stuff matters.

It was great to chat about all things altitude on the World Extreme Medicine Podcast!

High-altitude medicine is about much more than AMS.

In this new podcast episode, emergency medicine doctor and expedition leader Hannah Lock joins Eoin Walker to explore the full spectrum of altitude-related illness:

✅ HAPE & HACE explained in depth
✅ Retinal hemorrhage and how it affects climbers
✅ The reality of chronic mountain sickness
✅ Frostbite, dehydration, and performance decline at elevation

Sleep, muscle mass, and what really happens to the body above 5,000m

This conversation is a must-listen for anyone leading, planning, or joining expeditions at altitude.

It was lovely to be asked to give the key note talk at the Mynydd Climbing Club AGM this weekend. My parents have been club members for decades and weekends away with the club helped shape my love of the outdoors as a child.

I kicked off their winter lecture series on High Altitude which celebrates 75 years of the club and 50 years since Pete Boardman (who was a member of the Mynydd) and Joe Tasker climbed Everest by the south west face.

It was great to share some high altitude stories and some of the things I've learned over my work in mountain medicine.
