🎨Huge congratulations to Nnena Kalu on becoming the first artist with a learning disability to win the Turner Prize. Her colourful and expressive sculptures are helping break down barriers, showing that people with a learning disability can achieve anything.

Nnena, a British Nigerian artist with a learning disability and limited verbal communication, has faced challenges throughout her journey. Her studio manager, Charlotte Hollinshead, shared with The Guardian “Nnena has faced an incredible amount of discrimination, which has continued to this day, so hopefully this award helps to smash the prejudice away.”

Alex Farquharson, chair of the jury and director of Tate Britain, described her win as a watershed moment for the international art world, highlighting how it begins to dissolve boundaries.

Gig Buddies North Wales is looking for a Senior Coordinator to join our team. If you are committed to helping us address the inequalities people with a learning disability face, then this new job might be for you.

We are delighted that Gig Buddies Cymru has received funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to expand our work in North Wales over the next 3 years.

We have recently appointed a new Project Ambassador and Project Support Coordinator who have joined our team alongside our two existing coordinators.

We are now looking for a dynamic, friendly and passionate Welsh speaking Senior Coordinator to:

- Recruit new participants and volunteers and create new gig buddy pairs as well as support our existing buddies in the counties of Gwynedd and Ynys Mon.
- Help us lead, promote and develop the project in the six counties of North Wales.
- Mentor the two existing Coordinators who cover Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham.
- Facilitate the project’s new steering group.
- Monitor and report on the project’s progress.

Closing date: 19 January 2026.

Can disabled children be called entitled?

I see this comment constantly on my posts anytime I talk about inclusion, accessibility, more time, or the accommodations Ariana needed for rides, bouncy houses, etc. There is always someone saying, “I have never seen so much entitlement before.” And when I point out that something is not accessible enough or not designed well for disabled children, people say I am “playing victim.”

Disabled children do not get “extra.”
They get different because they need different.
They need extra time because their bodies work harder.
They need adaptive equipment because the world is not designed for them.
They need accommodations so they can access the same experiences other kids walk into without effort.

More time, help and/ or support does not mean entitled. It means included, able to participate and not being left out of childhood.

These kids already start life on the on an uneven playing field. We are not asking for more than other children. We are asking for a chance to be part of what other children are already doing.

And this is why calling a parent a victim for advocating for accessibility is so hurtful. Speaking up when something is not accessible is not “playing victim”. It is protecting your child. It is trying to make the world safer and more inclusive for them and for every child who comes after them. The word victim turns legitimate concerns into complaints. It silences parents who are already carrying more than most people will ever understand.

Wanting your child to be included is not “playing the victim”.

So no, disabled children are not entitled. They are kids navigating a world that was not built for them.
And next time a disabled child gets extra time due to their disability, I implore you to go up to them and tell them to their face- just how entitled they are.
