Building Better Movement with Pole Work Exercises 🐕

As a veterinary physiotherapist, one of my go-to exercises for both rehab and conditioning is pole work!

Walking your pet through carefully spaced poles encourages:
✅Improved joint range of motion – especially in hips, knees, and shoulders
✅Increased proprioception – helping pets become more aware of where their paws are
✅Stronger core and limb muscles – essential for injury prevention and recovery
✅Better balance and coordination – great for seniors, post-op patients, and athletic pets alike
✅Mental stimulation – because a focused mind supports a healthy body

Whether your pet is recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, or just needs a fun new fitness challenge, pole work can be tailored to their needs.

📌Always check with your vet physio before starting any new exercise, especially if your pet is recovering from an injury or surgery.

🐾 Say hello to Arlo! 🐾

This handsome pup has just begun his physiotherapy journey—not because of injury, but for muscle maintenance and general wellness checks.

Physio isn’t just for recovery, it’s also about staying strong, moving well, and catching any subtle changes early. Arlo is the perfect example of proactive care, and I’m excited to support him in feeling his best as he continues to live an active, happy life! 🐕

☀️ Do’s and Don’ts for Pet Owners in Warmer Weather – A Vet Physio’s Guide! ☀️

As a veterinary physiotherapist, I often see how heat can affect your pet’s comfort, joints, and even recovery after injury. Here’s how to help your pets stay safe and mobile in the summer heat! 🐾

✅ DO:
1. Keep them hydrated: Always have fresh water available as hydration helps with joint lubrication and muscle function.
2. Walk during cooler times: Early mornings or late evenings are best.
3. Check pavement temperatures: Hot pavement = sore paws and overheating.
4. Provide shade: Whether in the garden or on walks, make sure your pet has access to shady areas to cool down.
5. Watch for signs of fatigue: Excessive panting, slowing down, or limping could signal heat-related stress or a flare-up in mobility issues.
6. Use cooling aids: Cooling mats, damp towels, or dog-safe ice treats can help regulate body temperature.

❌ DON’T:
1. Overdo exercise: Heat increases fatigue—don’t push your dog to do too much. Especially risky for older pets or those with mobility issues.
2. Walk on hot pavement: If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Burns and joint flare-ups are common in summer!
3. Leave pets in cars or hot rooms: Even a few minutes can be dangerous.
4. Don’t walk during the hottest part of the day: Pavements and air temperatures can soar throughout the day, which can be dangerous for paws and overall health.
5. Ignore signs of overheating: Heavy panting, drooling, wobbling, or refusing to move are urgent signs to cool them down and call your vet.
6. Don’t ignore breed-specific risks: Brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs, etc) struggle more in heat and need extra care.

⚠️ Remember: Hot weather can worsen stiffness, inflammation, and fatigue. Stay mindful and keep your pets moving safely!

⚡ Electrotherapies: A Game-Changer for Recovery! ⚡

From reducing inflammation to speeding up tissue recovery, electrotherapies provide non-invasive treatments that enhance healing and improve overall well-being. Here’s how two of our go-to therapies work:

1️⃣ Red Light Therapy
Using specific wavelengths of light, red light therapy penetrates into tissues, boosting their body’s natural healing process.

💡 Benefits:
✔️ Reduces pain and inflammation
✔️ Stimulates tissue regeneration
✔️ Increases blood circulation
✔️ Speeds up recovery time for injuries and surgeries

Perfect for arthritis, muscle strains, or post-op recovery!

2️⃣ PEMF Therapy (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy)
PEMF therapy sends electromagnetic pulses to your pet’s cells, promoting natural healing and repair.

💡 Benefits:
✔️ Enhances cell regeneration and repair
✔️ Improves joint mobility and function
✔️ Reduces chronic inflammation and swelling
✔️ Speeds up the recovery process for bone, muscle, and soft tissue injuries

Great for pets with arthritis, hip dysplasia, or after surgery!

🌟 Why Electrotherapies Work:
Both therapies stimulate circulation, reduce inflammation, and encourage cellular regeneration to help your pet heal faster, feel better, and move more comfortably.

Combine these therapies for a comprehensive approach to pain relief and tissue healing.

🐾 What Are Sit-to-Stand Exercises? 🐾

One of the most effective and simple rehab exercises we use in veterinary physiotherapy is the Sit-to-Stand.

What it is:
A Sit-to-Stand involves encouraging your pet to move from a seated position into a standing position, and then repeating.

What it does:
Every repetition works to:
✅ Strengthen muscles—especially the glutes, quads, and hamstrings
✅ Improve joint mobility in hips, stifles, and tarsals
✅ Boost coordination and balance
✅ Increase body awareness (proprioception)
✅ Help with weight loss and maintaining a healthy metabolism

Perfect for:
✔️ Senior pets
✔️ Post-surgery recovery
✔️ Arthritis management
✔️ Canine athletes (as a warm-up or strength booster!)
✔️ Preventing muscle loss in aging pets

📌Always check with your vet physio before starting any new exercise, especially if your pet is recovering from an injury or surgery.

✨ Weight-Shifting Wednesday ✨

Weight shifting exercises are a fundamental component of veterinary rehabilitation and conditioning programs. These controlled movements encourage pets to gradually redistribute their weight from one side of the body to the other—activating underused muscles and promoting balanced strength.

Benefits include:
✔️ Improved balance and proprioception
✔️ Strengthening of core and limb musculature
✔️ Joint stability and controlled loading
✔️ Prevention of compensatory movement patterns
✔️ Support in post-operative or neurologic recovery

These exercises are especially beneficial for:
🐶 Pets recovering from orthopedic or neurologic conditions
🐱 Senior animals needing improved stability
🏃‍♂️ Active pets requiring core strengthening or injury prevention

📌 Always perform under professional guidance to ensure proper technique and safety.

📣 Exciting News at GRC Veterinary Physiotherapy! 🐾✨

I’m thrilled to introduce the latest addition to my treatment toolbox — Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy!

What is PEMF?
PEMF therapy uses low-frequency electromagnetic waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes at a cellular level. It’s completely non-invasive, pain-free, and well-tolerated by animals of all sizes.

How does it help?
PEMF therapy works by:
✅ Increasing blood flow and oxygenation
✅ Reducing inflammation and swelling
✅ Accelerating tissue repair and cell regeneration
✅ Alleviating pain and discomfort
✅ Enhancing mobility and flexibility
✅ Supporting joint and muscle health

This makes it an excellent treatment option for:
1. Pets recovering from surgery or injury
2. Older animals with arthritis or mobility issues
3. Working or sporting animals needing muscle recovery
4. Pets with neurological conditions or chronic pain

Benson’s Rehab Journey 🐾

I’m incredibly pleased with the progress Benson has made since beginning his physiotherapy journey with me.

Benson presented with bilateral cruciate injuries, a condition that can significantly affect mobility, comfort, and quality of life. Through a carefully tailored physiotherapy programme, including manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and progressive strengthening, we’ve seen remarkable improvements in both hind limbs.

✅ Improved weight-bearing
✅ Increased joint stability
✅ Restored muscle mass
✅ Enhanced overall mobility

Benson is now more confident and comfortable in his movement, and we’re continuing to build on this success with ongoing support and reassessments.

🐾 Meet Rama! 🐾

This elegant boy has recently started physiotherapy sessions to support muscle maintenance and promote a more balanced use of his hindlimbs🦴

Whippets like Rama are naturally lean and athletic, but just like any high-performance body, they benefit from regular check-ins to stay in top shape. We’re working on improving his hindlimb symmetry, building strength where it’s needed, and ensuring his movement stays smooth and pain-free for his upcoming competitions.

We’re already seeing progress—and plenty of tail wags! 🐶✨
