๐ŸŒป This week is Invisible Disabilities Week ๐ŸŒป

A reminder that you canโ€™t always see someoneโ€™s disability.
Around 80โ€“85% of disabilities are invisible. Autism, sensory needs, chronic health conditionsโ€ฆ theyโ€™re not always obvious to the eye.

My son is profoundly autistic and non-speaking.
But because he doesnโ€™t โ€œlook disabled,โ€ we get judged a lot.

Weโ€™ve had people comment.
Weโ€™ve been asked why weโ€™re parked in a disabled bay.
We get the looks, the stares, the comments all because people assume what disability should look like.

The truth is, most disabilities arenโ€™t visible.
You donโ€™t see the challenges, the effort it takes to get through certain situations, or the sensory overwhelm that can appear out of nowhere.

It hurts sometimes, if Iโ€™m honest.
Because behind those looks is a child doing his absolute best in a world that often doesnโ€™t make sense to him.

So please next time you see a family in a disabled bay, or a child struggling in public donโ€™t judge.

Just be kind.

You never know what someone is dealing with.

๐ŸŽถ Reconnect Through Music ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ•

What a fantastic day we had at todayโ€™s Reconnect Through Music session! Over 40 people joined us to enjoy great singing, friendship, and a delicious pizza lunch. ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿ• The room was filled with music and smiles from start to finish.

โœจ Ellysia set the festive mood by singing the first Christmas songs of the year โ€“ it might be early, but we all loved it! ๐ŸŽ„
๐Ÿ’‹ Natalie rocked the room with her version of Leader of the Pack by The Shangri-Las.
๐Ÿ‘‘ Elizabeth got everyone singing along and swaying to Dancing Queen by ABBA.
๐ŸŽญ Matilda brought Broadway energy with a song from Hairspray the Musical.
๐Ÿ’ž Anthony melted hearts with a beautiful rendition of Perfect by Ed Sheeran.
๐Ÿš— Sean made us all smile with Driving in My Car by Madness.
๐ŸŽค Finally, Ffion and Amy closed the performances perfectly with Stuck on You by Lionel Richie โ€“ a lovely duet to end on!

While we enjoyed the performances, we tucked into a tasty pizza lunch, prepared by Christy and Helen โ€“ thank you both for the delicious food! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ‘ A huge shoutout also goes to Pete the caretaker for setting everything up so smoothly ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ, and to Sharon for keeping track of the paperwork ๐Ÿ“‹.

The feedback from todayโ€™s session was full of warmth and positivity:
๐Ÿ’– โ€œIt was fun!โ€
๐Ÿ˜Š โ€œI love seeing my friends.โ€
๐Ÿค โ€œI like meeting new people.โ€
๐ŸŒˆ โ€œEveryone is friendly.โ€
โญ โ€œAll staff are amazing.โ€
โ€œI liked dancing in my chair.โ€
๐Ÿ’ช โ€œIt builds my confidence.โ€
๐Ÿ  โ€œI always love it here.โ€

Todayโ€™s session was filled with laughter, great music, and friendship. ๐ŸŽถ Thank you to everyone who joined in and helped make it such a happy, confidence-building day. We canโ€™t wait to see you all again next time! ๐Ÿ’•๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ•

๐ŸŒŸ Todayโ€™s Session Update! ๐ŸŒŸ

Today we were joined by Emma and her team from the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities team to learn all about the Community Advocacy Service. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

We had an informative presentation about advocacy โ€” what it is, how it helps, and what it means to us. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’š

We also learned about the amazing support that Dewis Advocacy provides, including:
โœ… Helping people have their voice heard
โœ… Supporting individuals to make their own choices
โœ… Standing up for peopleโ€™s rights
โœ… Providing independent advocacy for adults with learning disabilities and those experiencing mental health challenges

A huge thank you to Emma and her team for such a great, engaging session! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’™
Everyone really enjoyed learning more about advocacy and the important work Dewis CIL do in our communities. ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒˆ
