Litchdon Medical Centre

Litchdon Medical Centre We're a GP Practice working hard to deliver primary care services to over 16,700 patients We have a practice patient population of just over 16,000.

There has been a Litchdon Medical Practice in Barnstaple since at least the 1860s. For decades the practice was located in Litchdon Street just off Barnstaple town square and directly opposite the old North Devon Infirmary. The practice has relocated twice since then and now occupies purpose built premises on Landkey Road. We serve a population within a roughly 10 mile radius from Barnstaple and provide medical services on behalf of NHS Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). We offer a full range of medical care plus many other extra services that demonstrate our ethos of innovation for patient benefit. We are a training practice, one of our core values being the education and development of the next generation of clinicians. We see this as being extremely important and as such we run an active teaching programme for undergraduate medical students, post-graduate doctors pursuing higher training to become specialists in general practice, nurses and other allied health professionals. We are very grateful to our patients for their active participation in this education. We are a dispensing practice, which means that we are authorised by the CCG to dispense medicines to our rural patients. A full explanation of this can be found in the Prescription section of our website. Litchdon also provides the North Devon dermatology service working closely with the Northern Devon Healthcare Trust. We are very proud of the standard of this out-patient service that we have run since 2005. Further details can be found in the Dermatology section of our website

Reading for Wellbeing session, 10am to 12pm, Mon 2nd February.

What is Reading for Wellbeing? 📕
Reading for Wellbeing is all about discovering the therapeutic benefits that can be gained from thinking differently about how you access stories to improve your overall wellbeing. Join us to explore how you read and open yourself up to the possibilities this change in mindset can unlock.

Reading for Wellbeing is a programme set up by well-known author Ann Cleeves (creator of 'Vera' and 'Shetland') who has strong links to North Devon. Ann is the inspiration behind 'The Woodyard' initiative, a community project hosted by and through NDVS.

❓How can professionals help Young Carers?

A Young Carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps to care for a family member, relative or friend, and as many as 1 in 5 children and young people are Young Carers in the UK.

Professionals (such as teachers, healthcare workers, social workers, youth workers, and others) can play a vital role in supporting Young Carers. This could be through:

🫶Being observant and recognising the signs that someone might be a Young Carer
🫶Acknowledging their caring role
🫶Asking them what support they would find helpful
🫶Offering regular check-ins
🫶Sign post or refer into Devon Young Carers

Find out more about the many ways professionals can help Young Carers below 👇

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and the HPV vaccine helps protect young people from the virus that causes most cervical cancers.
If you’re a parent or carer, please look out for the HPV vaccine permission form and return it to the school.
The HPV vaccine protects against more than cervical cancer - it safeguards all young adults, women and men, from ge***al warts and some cancers of the ge***al areas and a**s, as well as some mouth and throat (head and neck) cancers. ♂️♀️
If you have missed it in school you can catch up by having the vaccination in the practice...book an appointment with the practice nurse.
