From Dental Nurse to Dental Hygienist & Therapist — I’ve Walked The same Path. Let Me Show You How.

This message is mainly for the dental nurse who feels stuck right now.

The one who works hard every day.
The one who cares deeply about patients.
The one who knows she is capable of more… but doesn’t know the next step.

Because that used to be me.

I was a dental nurse for 4 years.

I remember feeling proud of my work — but also frustrated.

I wanted more responsibility.
More independence.
More income.
More growth.

But I didn’t have a clear plan.

I doubted myself.
I wondered if I was smart enough.
I was scared of wasting time and money.

Still, I decided to stop waiting.

I followed the standards set by the General Dental Council.
I built a strong application.
I prepared properly for my interview.

And in 2006, I was accepted into Dental Hygiene training.

That one decision changed my life.

Today, I have:
• 18 years experience as a Dental Hygienist
• 11 years as a Dental Therapist
• Clinical independence
• Higher earning potential
• A career I am proud of

I am not special.

I just had a clear pathway.

And now, I would like to help other dental nurses through a clear pathway to achive thwir goal.

If you are tired of feeling stuck…
If you are earning under £40K and know you can earn more…
If you want to stop doubting yourself and finally move forward…

I can help you with a clearer guide towards achiving your goals.

You are not “just” a nurse.

You are already working in patient care.

You are closer than you think.

Ever wondered what the numbers your dental hygienist or dentist calls out during your dental visit were, when checking your gums?

Basic Periodontal Exam (BPE) is a UK dental screening tool used to assess the health of your gums. It's quick, simple, and effective in identifying gingivitis and advanced gum disease or potential oral health issues.

Your dentist or hygienist use a small, specially designed BPE probe used to measure the health of your gums across six areas, three in the upper jaw and three in the lower jaw. Each area is given a score based on the most affected area within that section.

Regular BPE checks help spot signs of gum disease early before they escalate into serious problems that can lead to tooth loss or systemic health issues. Gum dusease has been linked to heart disease, dimentia, diabetes. BPE codes are assigned during an examination ranging from 0 to 4, with an additional star (*) used in some cases.

0 beaing healthy and 4 signifying advanced progression of gum disease. Listen out to the scores the next time you visit your dental practice! 🦷✨️🧚🏾‍♀️

As a mum, it gives me such joy to be able to play a huge role in my sons oral health!
It is essential to establis a strong oral hygiene in routine in children early, so that they can keep these habits into their adult life.

♡Children's teeth should be brushed the minute they erupt in the mouth usually from 6 months old.
♡Parents and carers should brush their children's teeth for a minimum of 2 min, twice a day

♡For children under 3 years old a smear of toothpaste is advised. It is important to ensure children do not swallow toothpaste to avoid flourosis. Toothpaste used should have no less than 1000ppm Fluoride, unless otherwise advised by your dentist.

♡For children 3-7 years old, toothpaste containing 1000-1500ppm should be used. Use a pea sized amount. Parents and carers should be brushing children's teeth and supervising toothbrushing. Make sure yo spit out and not rinse to maximise effects of Fluoride.

♡From 7-8 years, many children have developed manual dexterity to allow them to brush their own teeth. However parents and carers should be supervising toothbrushing, to ensure they are brushing correctly. Toothpastes containing 1350-1500ppm of Fluoride should be used.

The NHS advises that children visit the drntist when first teeth appear, or before they are 12 months old. This helps with familiarity with the environment and get to know the dentist. The dentist can advise you on how to prevent decay and identify any oral health problems at an early stage.

The role of a dental therapist is less known amongst the general public and within the dental profession itself. This could be due to a lack of public awreness of their role and not being fully utilized within dental practicea as dental hygienists are.

Many people are more familiar with dentists and hygienists, dental nurses than dental therapists. There are a lot of dental practices that have not fully adopted the expanded role of dental therapists. A lack of awareness and education contribute to the confusion about the expanded role of a dental therapist.

The main difference between a Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist is that a dental hygienist focuses on preventative care like professionally cleaning of theeth to prevent dental disease and patient education. A dental therapist has a broader scope of practice, that includes restorative procedures like fillings and extractions, (particularly on baby teeth).

Dental therapists can also perform the duties of a hygienist, and in many cases, both roles work together under a dentist's prescription.

Thinking of whitening your teeth? For successful teeth whitening, read the caption! ⬇️

Book an appointment with your dentist for a dental check-up! This will determine if your teeth are suitable for whitening. The dentist will look for risks to teeth whitening such as sensitivity, gum disease, tooth decay, build up from tarter and stains, and restorations that will not whiten with treatment.

Professional teeth cleaning is essential prior to teeth whitening to remove all surface deposits and build up that will hinder an even whitening of teeth. If this step is missed, it will result in uneven whitening of the enamel!

During whitening treatment, ensure you are using a desensitising toothpaste to help minimise tooth sensitivity. Avoid teeth staining foods and drinks, avoid acidic foods, and make sure oral hygiene is excellent!

Stopping smoking is definitely a must!
